Photographing action

I want to take a picture of horse racing. I only have a 50mm and a 135mm lens and want to know... should I use a 400 speed film? I also will be using this film to photograph the horse before the race and follow its performance during the race. Do you have any suggestions on the type of shutter speed and f/stop to use in order to capture the photo finish winner? Any info will be helpful. Thank you -- j

Use 400 or higher. If you want high-quality results stay at 400 because anything higher will produce too much grain and a loss of sharpness. Keep the shutter speed as fast as possible. Use the light meter to find out what F-stop will be needed after the exposure is set. I would say 500-1000th of a second at F2.8-F4. This will greatly depend on the lighting so make sure to use the light meter. Prioritize the shutter speed and let the meter determine what you need to use for the F-stop. Generally it will be wide open. This cause a shallow depth-of-field and will make the horse stand out in sharp focus against an out of focus background.
