Camera not auto focusing all the time with lense.

My camera, Elan IIE and my most recent purchase of Canon Elan 7e, does not auto focus all the time when shooting with my tamron 28-80 lense. It seems if I'm outside under a tree with filtered light the camera can't won't focus on the image even when I fill the frame. It seems the viewfinder gets a little dark and that's when it doesn't focus properly. Then the view finder gets brighter and then it works fine. This happened with the Elan IIe, so I went out to buy another camera, Elan 7e, and used the same lense and it does it on the Elan 7e as well. Is it the lense not communicating with the camera because it is not a Canon? Please help!

  Rodney,
Do you have the AF assist light turned off? IIRC, the problem is you have to turn on the flash (force it) to get the AF assist light to function. If you do not want to use the flash, then your only option is to manually focus the lens.

You may have to practice manually focusing the camera. Unfortunately the camera manufacturers have dropped puting split images and microprism rings on cameras with AF systems. Compound this with a "dim viewfinder" in lower light, a situation accentuated by the slow lens you have and it's not as easy as with a pure manual focus camera and a fast lens. You will likely find it easier to manually focus at the 80mm end of the zoom range, then pull the zoom back to compose the image. I have one relatively slow zoom lens and this is how I manually focus it in lower light levels.

AF systems do have trouble in low lighting . . . the clue here being your problem occurs with "dim viewfinder" . . . which is evidence of a low lighting situation.
