How to shoot in a theatre?

I've been asked to take photographs of a theatre performance (onstage shots of actors performing). I 'll use a Nikon FM with a Nikon 50mm and a 85 mm lenses. I'll also be using a Vivitar 285 flash if necessary. Can anyone give be advice on what film to use. (I tend to like TMAX 400) and Kodak's C-41 black and white film). What film speed should I use and is the flash really needed. If I do need to use a flash would I consider it outside fill or indoors main lighting?

There are a lot of variables here. Is it possible to go there before you're supposed to shoot so you can take some light readings and see how the lighting looks? I shoot theatre now and then and generally the stage lights are strong enough to get by with a fast lens and a 400 speed film. I'd probably stick with the TMAX 400 and if you find it's too slow then push it a stop or two. I prefer to shoot these shots without flash if the stage lights are bright enough. Although, the light can be very contrasty so fill light can be useful.
