Equine Closeups

I am planning on doing a series of eye closeups on our horses. See attached sample.

I Have a Nikon F55 with a 28-80 Zoom
The attached photo was taken in portrait mode.

I am unhappy with the tone of the photo, it's too light, the horse is a least a 1 stop darker.

I have two questions

If I go manual and meter close on the face, will I have to compensate? ie the horses face is not medium tone. Would a 18% grey card help here?

If I get the shots I want, I may want to blow them up quite large, 8X10 or even 16X20. If I use colour slide film and bracket the shots, would this be better for enlargement?

Question #1 - You can use a gray card or you can determine how many stops from 18% gray the horse is and compensate. Or you could meter off of your palm and open up one stop.

Question #2 - You could get good results from slide film but to get them printed you will run into more expense. I've made beautiful 16x20 prints from Kodak Portra 160NC. It's a print film and it gives great results.
