Lens hoods interchangeable?

Are lens hoods interchangeable for different brand lenses, if they are of the same filter size?

Canon lens hoods are made for one or up to three of their lens. For example, I purchased a Canon ET-65II lens hood for my 135mm 2.8 EF lens that can also be used for my Canon EOS 85mm 1.8 lens. This lens hood is designed to be used with only one other Canon EOS lens. If I followed the chart that shows the technical details of Canon lens hoods, I would need a different lens hood for a Canon 28-105 EOS lens.
At the time I purchased the lens hood, the store owner recommened that I purchase instead screw in lens hoods. These are rubber, with a metal ring iside. They match the filter diameter of the lens. For example, I brought one for my 52mm size lens and two to use with my 58 lens. While they are nearly as duarable and look a little "cheesy", these lens hoods get the job done and take practically no room in a camera bag. The Canon hood takes as much room as my Elan 85mm lens.
bets of all, you can get a set of the fold-up, rubber type lens hoods for what one Canon ET-65 costs. You need filters on your lens to use the screw-on lens hoods but a skylight filter frfom Hoya costs practically nothing.

Sigma lens like the 28-105mm 2.8-4.0 lens come with their own lens hood. Tamron also includes a lens hood with its popular 28-300mm lens. The lens hoods take less space and Sigma's bayonet type are easier to use with a polarizer than the Canon ET-65II.

Be cautious about interchanging lens hoods. I have a good number of them that were made for specific lenses. Even though their mounting ring may be the same and will physically fit other lenses, they are not interchangeable.

The purpose of a lens hood is to shade the lens. A properly designed one has an angle of view slightly larger than that of the lens for which it is designed and is deep enough to shade the lens objective under most conditions. Put one for an 85mm lens on a 50mm lens and you're virtually guaranteed of vignetting the photographs. Not a Bad Thing if the vignetting effect is desired (I've done this before), but a surprise if it's not.

You can interchange them if they can handle the lens' angle of view. For zooms, this is the shortest length of the zoom range. If in doubt, test it with a few photographs. The vignetting, if slight, may not be that easy to see in the viewfinder.

Canon makes only a handful of lens hoods that are interchangable. Also, a review of the Canon site shows that they appear to be moving away from having a lens hood work for more than one model. I do own two of the three lens that use the ET-65 II as mentioned before. I also owned one other Canon lens that worked with the hood. NONE of those lens had any problems with vignetting because the hood is designed to work with four different Canon lens.
I am certain that I would have had problems if I tried using this Canon hood on my Sigma lens. However, many Sigma and Tamron lens come with their own lens hood. The lens hood included in that packet should be used only with that lens, even if you have, for example, two Sigma lens.
If you use Canon lens, you might want to check the lens charts and lens hood information at www.usa.canon website to make sure you purchase a hood that matches your lens. Camera information can be found by using the consumer search engine. (the site is slow and the search engine is archiac but it does contain useful information, once you navigate the numerous sub-menus.) You may want to check the EF lens chart for information on lens hoods prior to deciding purchasing Canon EOS lens. (I choose three that use the same hood so I could save space in my camera bag and money from my wallet.)
