The G lenses are consumer and cheap, though there are a couple of G zooms that get great reviews from some. Check out KenRockwell.com for Nikon lens reviews.

The D designation on a lens will cost more than a non-D, but will also hold its resale value better. I have both D and non-D lenses and haven't discovered a difference so far with my N90s. By the way, the G lenses will NOT work on the N90s, just in case you ever need to know.

My advice is to ask yourself what kind of long-term investment you are willing to make here. The cheaper zooms will work fine for most anything you'd be shooting, but they do have problems on the long and short ends of their focal lengths and also at both max and min apertures. Lack of sharpness is also a problem at certain focal length-aperture combinations. You will save money buying G zooms, but they will lose their value as soon as you walk out the door of the camera shop.

The N80 is a fantabulous camera. I advise you to invest in the best lenses you can afford, even if that means sacrificing two cheap zooms for one really nice D zoom that will last you for years and years.

Surf the eBay lists for the lenses you are interested in. This will give you a good idea which lenses are the most sought after and which ones hold their value. You can find the 35-70 f/2.8 D for around $500 USD and the non-D for $350 right now on eBay. The D version lens is priced around $700 new. It's one of the best zoom lenses NIkon makes, but most pros are trading theirs in for the newer 28-70 f2.8 ($1,500+ new).

That said, the G lenses work extremely well with the D1 line of digital SLRs(better than with 35mm SLRs), so this is another thing to think about.

Thanks to all for response. I received 28-80G 3.3-5.6 lense bundled with N80. Though results are good but it is not smooth in operartion while zooming or focusing manually. I also feel after some time it will give its way. In its place, should I go for 28-105D lense which I understand is reasonably priced?

The 28-105 is a nice lens -- it was my first midrange Nikon zoom. I would definitely recommend this one over any of the G lenses. One tip: get a wide angle polarizer (they're thinner than the regular polarizers) to use with this lens. The thicker Tiffen I used tended to darken the edges of my photos when zooming out to 28mm. Also think about buying this lens new since it's not much less on eBay these days. It's still a very popular piece of glass.

P.S. If you check out my California pictures on my web site, most of these shots were made with the 28-105.
