SLR Cameras

What SLR camera is best in $300 range which has all the latest functions. The camera you suggest must be able to be the best in that range and it must have future enhancement (upgrade) like adding lens and any other options, basically that camera should be able to fix external flash (Umbrella type)or any other.

Only a few camera functions are really important. It has to be a light-tight box that focuses the image exactly onto the film, and allows both aperture and shutter to control the light striking the film. All else is fluff. We get a lot of questions from people who let a fully automatic camera do everything and then wonder what the camera is doing.
In the $300 range, look for either Nikon or Pentax. Consider a manual focus, manual exposure-setting camera. The best buys, in my opinion, are a used Nikon FM2, or a Pentax K1000 or MX.
If you must have auto-everything, look at the 2nd camera up the line in Pentax and Nikon, NOT bottom of the line. These two companies allow older manual focus lenses to be used on their fully automatic cameras. Save money up front by buying a 50-mm lens. The images you get will be so sharp, you will demand good performance from any later lens you buy.
All the cameras mentioned, I think, allow PC cord flash connections. If not, many flashes connect by way of a hot-shoe-to-flash cord.
Photogs are pretty opinionated (heh-heh) on brand choices, so talk to other folks and look at the Reviews section of this web page.

  Hi Doug,

Thank you very much for your fast response, As you said I also do consider only manual focus, but sometimes if my family members want to use then it will be better for them to handle an automatic one. In that case can you suggest the exact model name and # in the range I specified earlier where I can use 50mm lens also. Is Pentax MZ 10 model is stopped? Can you tell any other model which is more than Pentax MZ 10 or atleast equal to it, please advise me. By the way what is "PC cord flash connections".

Sorry to be so late in replying to you; I was on vacation. The only sure way to find out about models and specifications is the manufacturer's web page, in this case, Pentax or Nikon.com. None of us can keep up with the papid changes.
In the case of Pentax, try http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/
A PC connection is a way to connect a flash to your camera that allows more flexibilty than a shoe on the camera. For example, if you want to avoid red-eye in people shots, use a bracket to set the flash off to the side. You can use an inexpensive PC cord for this connection.

I tend to recommend full manual cameras only for people who are taking photography courses where manual lens and cameras are required. Most "automatic" cameras allow for full manual control. They also include modes like aperature priority for a photographer who wants the camera to "help a little" or program mode when you hand the camera to a friend who only wants to line it up and press a button. I would recommend a used Canon Elan II or a used Nikon camera that has automatic capability and no less than a 1/4000 sec maximum shutter speed. If you go with a Canon, I would highly recommend getting a 28-105 zoom and 1 50mm 1.8 lens. The Canon 50mm 1.8 lens sells used for as little as $50.00 and is tack sharp. The lack of a PC connector can be easily addressed by devices madee by Nikon and Wein that mount on your hot shoe and let you plug a strobe into your camera.
