Is your camera automatic? Shutter speed is the problem. You will need 1/125th of a second or 1/250th to stop the action.

I take motocross photos myself, and I thought the faster the shutter speed the better. Wouldn't 1/125th or 1/250th of a second be too slow to stop the action? When I use my Nikon SLR, I set the shutter speed at 1000. I don't know anything about the intricate aspect of photography, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

High speed sports like you described require at least 1/500 second, or flash, to freeze the action. (A faster speed is recommended, but not always possible.) As a general guideline...1/125 will freeze a person walking past you. 1/250 will stop him in his tracks if he runs, and 1/500 or faster will catch him (or her), going airbourne or freeze fast moving machines. The problem may indeed, lie with the lighting available and your auto-camera selecting speeds too slow.
