Photography Question

Natacha C. Romain

Medium Format or 35mm film

Hello all....
I started doing photography about a year ago and I have a lot of people interested in hiring me to take pictures of them. I am taking b&w pix and currently use Kodak Tri-X 400 with great results. I am fond of very sharp pictures and would like to know if I would do better to use medium format film instead of 35mm. I am not planning on producing prints any larger than 11x14.

If you suggest medium format, what's the best type of film to use and what's the best type of camera to use as well?

Since I do my own processing and printing, I'd also like to know what kind of enlarger is recommended if I were to use medium format film. I have a besseler 35printmaker.

Any information you could provide would be much appreciated.

Thank you, in advance, for your assistance.

Medium format is going to be sharper and have better tonality. But if you aren't planning on enlarging over 11x14 it may be overkill unless you insist on using Tri-x for every shot. Tri-x, while being a great film and one of my favorites, is not the best for enlargements due to it's course grain. I like the grain but it can give the image an appearance of softness that you may not want if you are looking for sharp images. So if you're looking for sharp pictures you might try a different film first rather than investing in a larger format camera. TMAX100 is sharp and fine grained as is Ilford PanF.

If you do decide to go with a medium format... check out the Mamiya website. We are all avid users of the Mamiya 645 and love the results.
