Photography Question

Nikon or Canon?

I have had Nikon cameras for about 8 yrs, but I never really like it.
I think AF is slow, and pictures are not as sharp as I like.
Is Canon 1V a better camera than F5; focus faster and lenses are shaper (L vs ED)?
Can Nikon or Canon produce photos as good as German made camera?

I'm just an amateur; a couple of guys here are pros, so can advise you better on these top-of-the-line cameras.

I did not buy off on all this hoopla about German lenses until I tried one, a 40-mm Summicron on a Leitz-Minolta CL. It's the LENS, not the box; the CL is infuriatingly fragile, although I like using it. Used with a tripod when necessary, the images truly are a tad sharper, at the corners of the frame, at apertures like f2.8, and when enlarged. Are German Leitz and Contax lenses sharper than the very BEST Canons and Nikon's? I think the difference narrows to insignificance.
Visit the least strident of the Leica afficionado sites, cameraquest.com, and let Steven Gandy fill you in. We're talking manual focus here. If you shoot sports and animals on safari, and need autofocus, you might as well stick with Nikon or Canon, like many working pros.

First of all let me lead off by saying that I'm a pro and I use Canon equipment (in addition to my medium format gear).

To answer you first question(s): Is the 1V better than the F5? - depends on who you are. There is no one camera for everyone. I prefer the options and layout of Canons so that's the avenue I chose. Are the lenses faster focussing? - Yes, Canons do focus faster. That's one advantage of Canon gear. But we're talking microseconds here. Are Canon lenses sharper? - I'd like to think so but in reality I doubt you could really see much difference between comparable top of the line lenses from each company.

As for the second question: Can either of those brands compete with german optics? Certainly. They do every day. The question is, do you want to pay for the german optics? They're not cheap. And the cameras that use them are not cheap and don't have the options that Canon or Nikon have (# of accessories etc.). There's a reason most pros use Canon or Nikon. It's mostly because they have a complete line of lenses and accessories. More so than other brands.

In the end you may want to look at your technique. If you aren't getting sharp images it could just be you and not your camera/lens. Just a thought.
