Shooting Sports Pictures Hi, I'm photography editor at our school's newspaper. I am having great difficulty in taking basketball pictures. The lighting is horrible, and out of a roll, four or less are able to be developed. When I add the flash, for better lighting conditions, the camera takes forever to snap the picture. We even tried going up to 1600 speed film. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you..... Jenny We use the canon EOS 500 N Rebel G

Are you trying to use a built in flash? Metz? Q-flash? A built in flash wouldn't give you enough light. So don't even bother. We use a Metz flash unit and set it at M (manual). Set our camera to 125 and use 1600 film. We can't speed shoot... but almost every photograph we get comes out. Technically, it would be great if you could set up lighting around the court before hand. Sometimes, when they allow us to... we set up a light and stand above us onto the court and photograph in that certain area for a while. Then pick our next spot. However, that's just too much work. If you don't have a flash unit at your school try to convince them it's a necessity. Position yourself on the basket side of the court(towards one corner), rather than the sidelines. This gives you more time to find good photographs of the players running and passing etc... It just takes practice. Have you tried using 1600 film without a flash and over developing it? Let me know.

You are lucky to get a response from someone who actually does this. I can only add that you can't use a shutter speed any faster than your flash sync speed. Your camera's instruction book will tell you that. Also, go to a pro or college game and watch the newpaper photogs carefully. Catch one at the break and ask what he/she uses.
