Focus problem

I have a K1000, some longer lenses, and a doubler. I've had trouble with either accurate focus or mirror slap when using 200-400mm focal lengths. It can happen handheld or on a tripod, and per the split ring and ground glass, the lens appeared perfectly focused.
Here's something else: when the split ring says I'm focused on objects miles away, the infinity position on my lenses (yes, all of them) is still a couple degrees away. When I put my lenses on either of 2 other bodies I have access to, I get the same results.
All of my lenses are Pentax brand primes and so's the doubler. What's going on?

I invite you to go to http://medfmt.8k.com/third/mlu.html for some tips and links. If the longest lenses don't have their own tripod sockets to balance the whole set-up better, Bogen/Manfrotto sells some nifty steadiness aids for telephoto users. Try not to extend the tripod's center post very much at all. Extension tends to make the whole affair even more top-heavy. Try hanging your gear bag from the center of the tripod and barely dragging on the ground, not swinging like a pendulum. Anything to lower that center of gravity.
If you do a lot of this, consider a Pentax K2, KX or LX body; they have mirror lock-up.
I have the same situation in your 2nd paragraph with Canon FD lenses. It doesn't seem to hurt anything.
