good camera for amateur Ok, my Pentax K1000 is getting a bit old. I've been using for almost 2 years now. It seems as if something bad is causing it not to work well with a flash and a repair would cost the amount of the camera. Anyway, I'm just wondering if someone could recommend a camera to push me to the next level. I'm stil an amateur and will be attending NYIP soon and would like a camera to dish out good professional looking pictures but doesnt cause me to have to read a textbook to work it. Any recommendations (hopefully under $300) I like to work manually but I really need to get into the whole digital/Automatic world. Help and keep up the good work Ty

Consider sticking with Pentax, since you already have a lens or two. Pentax, unlike my friends at Canon, allows the use of manual focus lenses on their autofocus SLR's. You would not have to buy any additional lenses, unless you expect to shoot sports or some situation in which autofocus would be a benefit. You would then have your K1000 as a back-up body. I wouldn't buy the bottom of the line. A Pentax SLR a cut or so above the bottom should fit your budget. Stick with working manually. You'll be a better photographer for it. Use autofocus only when you need it. Pentax will come up with a digital SLR some day. By then, you'll have your great Pentax optics to use with it.
