Difference between G-type lense and D-type lense

What is the difference between a G-type lense and a D-type lense for Nikon cameras?

Also, my buddy has a G-ype lense that says AF(auto-focus) but it doesn't work in auto...

thanks for the help

Nikkor's D lenses have chip that relays focus distance to the camera body, and have a ring to set the aperture.

G-series lenses also have the distance chip, but lack the aperture ring. G lenses can be used in full auto exposure mode on any af Nikon, but you can only set the aperture (manual and aperture-priority) with only most recent generation of bodies that have aperture control on the camera. G lenses are 100% compatible with F5, F100, N80, N65, N55. Can only be used in P, S modes with F4, N90, N70, N60, N50, and earlier.
