I'd use a different layer for each color, an adjustment layer, if possible. That way, if you overdo it, you can adjust the opacity of the layer. For layers to be visible, the eye symbol has to appear for each one. Click that box on any layer you want to see. Hang with this. The learning curve can be steep with layers, but it's well worth the effort.

I went back into this and looked for the simplest way. Think of the new layers you'll be making (one new layer for each color and area you'll be colorizing)as a clear sheet of acetate on which you will be painting. Make that first New Layer (no need for a duplicate layer or adjustment layer). For example, you want to make the bride's flowers red. Select the flowers by any selection method you choose, lasso, masks, magic wand, whatever. You should feather the edges of that selection by maybe three pixels. Go to Window and drop down the color swatches palette. Pick a shade of red or pink and go to edit/Fill. It will be boldly horrible. Now go up to that layer's palette and cut back on the opacity or on the fill amount. Cut it back until it looks just right. Want to color a bridesmaid's dress blue? Make another layer. Select the shape of the dress. Remember, you're seeing the dress on the background layer THROUGH the layer you're painting on. Find a shade of blue that's close, and do the fill and fade trick. To see all your layers together, be sure the eye symbol shows on all layers.I don't think you need full photoshop to do this. Use LE or maybe Elements.

In a running dialogue with Kiseli, I'm told it's even simpler. Do fill and fade for large areas, but for small things like individual flowers, simply enlarge and use a brush of a size and softness that you can control. Thanks, Kiseli.
