One More Beginner Question

I am not a photographer, nor am I taking a class. I am interested in an SLR and I am having trouble doing the research because I am not familiar with the "lingo" - think non computer person buying their first computer.
I am interested in buying a camera for the taking pictures of the family. I would like to learn about photography - but on my own time. I am looking to spend between 250.00 and 300.00 - any suggestions would be VERY appreciated.

Canon or Nikon are my favorites, get something with shooting modes you can use now, and manual setting you can advance to latter. This way you can add flash units and lenses as you grow and learn, and you won't grow out of the camera to quickly.

Go to a serious camera store and get Kodak's Guide to 35-mm Photography. When you buy your camera, try to avoid the cheap zoom that comes on most of them. Opt instead for the least expensive 50-mm lens from your camera's maker. You may get what you want even cheaper, and get better glass.

Nikon N55 or N65 with a kit lens will do you well, Likewise Canon's Rebel 2000 with same lens. You can get them online for MUCH less than camera stores prices.
