Enhancing black & white photos with filters

Is there a filter, such as Cokin Filters, that I can use to enhance the black and white colors when taking black and white photos? I would like the black blacker, and the white whiter if you can understand my meaning.

  Patrick,
The traditional filters used to punch up contrast on black and white film (blacks blacker and whites whiter) are the yellow, orange and red filters. The yellow will have the least effect and the red will have the boldest effect. Additionally, each color filter has several intensities available. Traditionally, I shoot with a mid-density yellow film for most black and whites, but when I want very dramatic results, I use the mid-density red. Just remember, the darker the filter, the longer the exposure, so make sure to have a cable release and tripod if you will be shooting in low light conditions or with a slower film. On a side note, I have heard that some camera's also have a problem with accurate AF with the red filters (creates a dark low contrast field that the AF computers have a hard time working with), so keep this in mind as you may want to compose and focus without the filter, then put the filter on to actually shoot the picture.
Good luck! Michaelle
