can some one explain to me, my camera lens?

My husband just bought me a pentax p3. now I know its old, as in "85" old, but it was a sweet gesture! what I dont understand is all the number crap thats on it. like, what is ml? my lens is a 1:2 50mm, how do I use it? what do the numbers mean?
can anyone explain this to me please!

What he gave you is a cut or two above the dumb-down fully automatic point'n shoot cameras. That 50-mm lens is excellent, better than the lens on nearly any point'n shoot. You can set it to the P setting, which means Program. The camera will set the shutter and lens aperture setting for you. (You probably have an A setting on the lens, too. Set it to A.) Now, you just need to look through the viewfinder and turn the focusing ring (the big one)until your subject looks clear.

If you find you like photography, you can set the camera to M, which means manual. That way you can choose a fast shutter to stop action, choose a small aperture to make everything in your picture clear, and do all kinds of other neat stuff. But until you're ready to do that, you have a nice camera that handles the light settings for you. Go to manuals2go.com and get an instruction book for $6.
Your husband thinks you deserve a real camera. Now give him a hug.
