Photography Question

Kristina M. Covey

pricing negatives

I took pix at a preschool and one parent bought prints and would like to buy the negs. The parent mentioned possibly using them for 1 year then buying them outright. Has anyone heard of this method? I would like some pricing suggestions for the negatives. The parent gave me a model release and would like to use this as a negotiating tool. FYI there are 15-20 images, color and B&W. Thanks for any input!

My questions are, why do they want (need) the negs? And why would you want to sell them? Why not just sell them prints?

Question--why does the parent need the negatives if she's already signed a model release and given this to you? You don't have much use for a model release with no negatives to go with it! I wouldn't sell my negatives to anyone. You took the photos. They are yours and were copyrighted to you the moment you took them. I suggest keeping the negs and the signed model release and filing them to license to future third party interests. Tell her she can buy as many prints as she wants, but the negs are yours.

Some people! :)
