Photography Question

Viewing Slides

I've seen several suggestions to use shoot slides instead of negative film here and in the books I've been reading. But, I'm having a hard time understanding how you "deal" with slides. Do those of you who shoot mainly slides make them into prints? My local developer told me it's $3 per slide to do that. Do you shoot a roll of slide film and then look at them on some kind of projector and then get only the ones you like turned into prints? Or do you just leave them as slides and only look at them when you pull out the projector? I'm so used to taking photos, turning them into prints and putting them in albums that I can't picture not having prints to flip through when I want to look at my work.

I asked this question somewhere else and didn't get a response. I hope I didn't offend the person I asked.

Thank you!

Candi

  Hi Candi,
If prints for the photo album are what you are looking for, slides may not be the best choice, as having prints made from slides can be costly.

However, some film developers offer a service that makes dealing with slides a little less expensive.

In the area where I live one of the local developers offers a "scan to internet" service for about $6.00 a roll. When your film is developed they scan the roll to their site--from there you can download the scanned images to your PC. This allows you to preview the images on your computer and decide from there which ones you might want prints of.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Jeff. I don't know that I *want* prints for a photo album, but I guess I'm concerned about the ease of viewing my photos/slides. I'm just a beginner and I like to be able to go through my photos and look at what I did and didn't do to see how I can improve. It seems rather cumbersome to look at slides. Is there an easy way to do that? I have something that my husband I used years ago to view slides, but it wasn't a projector. It is a "box" that has a window on the front of it. I don't know what it's called, though.

Well, I'll check into the kind of service you just described and see what I can find.

Thanks again.

Candi

I buy the plastic pages that hold 20 slides in little pockets. Put that against a light table, or hold it up to a sunlit wall.
If you don't want to invest 500-1600 in a quality film scanner, have your very best ones scanned to CD at the highest resolution they can give you. You can then buy an inkjet printer for $150 that will give you 8 x 10 prints you won't believe.

Thank you, Doug! We actually have a great Epson printer that prints out 8 X 10 photos with unbelievable resolution. Maybe I'll go that route.

Thanks again.
