Problem Scanning My Negatives

Recently, all the photos I scan in with my film scanner look soft when I post them to the web. The original photos are sharp, but the scan looks bad. When I first started using my film scanner, I noticed a big improvement. I was using the scanner setting to do adjustments and did not use Photoshop Elements to do too many adjustments, except for brightness. Then I thought I could just scan the images and let PS do the adjustments. That is when the scans started looking worse than before. Also, I started using a new lens, a Canon 75-300 mm zoom lens (with a tripod or monopod). I don't know if the problem is with the scans or if the lens is not as sharp as I thought it would be. I am going to post two shots of a grey duck, one was adjusted in the scanner, and the other was adjusted in PS. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help given.
