N80 non D lens compatibility

I cannot get a Nikon 300mm AF lens to autofocus with my N80. Does this mean the lens probable is not a D lens or is there possibly something wrong with the lens? Other lens do autofocus with the camera.

  why not get a "g" lens. all-metal,whereas "d" is all-plastic.
don't forget-Nikon mount is-metal.
however-look for fittings. John

Dave, my suggestion is to take the camera and the lens to a reputable camera store that knows a lot about cameras and have them check the lens out on the camera to see if there maybe something wrong with the lens or if there is just a setting that is not set right on the camera.
