beginners book for digital photography

Looking for a book with the basics on digital photography. I know Jim has some listed on Amazon, but which one would help me. I am the last person on earth to convert from film to digital and need a easy book.

My biggest challenge moving to digital was learning to edit images using Photoshop. I shoot raw images that have to be processed and learning to use ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) was one of my 1st classes and still most important aspect of shooting digitally. Many courses and teachers that used to teach here have been replaced with other courses but many past photographers/teachers from Better Photo are still my go-to people. Jim Zuckerman has a lot of books as well as Bryan Peterson, and Deborah Sandidge. Lewis Kemper had one of my favorite courses "Toolbox for Photoshop" and I believe most/all these courses have been transferred to books. The online courses here might be a great introduction to get started and the prices are very reasonable. There are also other programs like Adobe Lightroom & Capture One software that process raw files. Even if you shoot jpeg only in camera (which will edit the photo as it converts the image to jpeg) you will still need to know digital editing to make the image as you want it to look. Scott Kelby, Charlotte Lowrie & Ben Wilmore are others with books I recommend. Hope this helps.

  Hi Jana,

Yes, my BetterPhoto Basics book might be the best for you, as far as shooting is concerned. It's the one people seem to love the most, as it's a best seller. I also love my first Amphoto book "The BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Photography", and my book on Nature Photography because, next to photographing my kids (and dogs), I LOVE photographing nature.

Carlton is right about editing. In addition to recommending JZ and Lewis and Deb, I recommend my Better Photoshop online class.

Enjoy the transition... I remember switching from film to digital, carrying one SLR with slides and a DSLR on my other shoulder. It did not take long for me to ditch the film camera... the benefits of shooting digital are enormous.

Have fun,
Jim

Assuming you mean the basics on shooting with a digital camera (and not, say, wanting to learn the basics of Photoshop), I'll throw in a 2nd vote for Jim's "BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Photography" -- I picked it up 10 years ago with my first-ever camera (a digital) before a vacation, and knew really nothing much about photography / exposure, let alone digital. I then read it cover to cover twice, doing the exercises, and it really drove home the concepts in a clear, plain way, allowing me to never use "full Auto Mode" and get into my camera's manual controls. (It also brought me here to this website, way back then.)
A great intro book; if you're coming from shooting film, you may already know the basics of ISO, aperture and shutter speed working together -- they migrate unchanged into the digital camera world (assuming you've got a camera with some manual controls, vs. a 100% fully-auto-mode point-and-shoot).
But if you're not familiar with those concepts, or if you're rusty on them, this would be a great start; I've given it as a gift several times to aspiring newbie-photographers.
