Photography Question

Ellen Rosenberg

teleconvertor or longer lense?

I have a Nikon N90, with second lense of 80 to 200 at 2.8. I am looking to get "closer", wondering if teleconvertors are worth attaching to Nikon lense, or do I need to purchase a 300. Have researched some of the teleconvertors for Nikon and get mixed reviews
Thanks
Ellen

Remember!, a tele will reduce you 2 stops if it's a 2X, and also won't be suitable in low light conditions (any brand), because your pics will become a little dark, grainier and not good to be enlarged!..

About my own experience I could say that I own a 28-300 mm vivitar and a tamron 2X tele, and I only can use it when there is a lot of light (let's say around 5 the latest and pics are not so clear!..
I think that even if you buy a kind of a cheap 1200 mm (any brand/vivitar, phoenix, etc...), you might end having slightly better quality pics and with more light!...

And please correct me anybody if I'm wrong!...

That is the info that I researched also,, just wanted to confirm with you gurus of photography. It seems that even the Nikon teleconvertor is not worth it. SO any recommendations for next lense, I have 28 to 70 2.8 and as I stated the 80 to 300 at 2.8. I am spoiled by the fast speed and ability to focuse down to 2.8. Suggests for next lens to bring me closer...
thanks

Ellen I'm not a guru!..But I observe and learn from mistakes from people and from myself!...

If you own a Nikon stay with Nikon lenses!...There is a website where you could get a lot of reviews on lenses and cameras from any type. The website is www.photozone.de/index2.html , well I think that page is in blank but click on the Home tab; browse the whole website (it's also a forum where you could ask and know abouth technical information)it and you will see what lenses are suitable for you as they have different features!...

Thanks, that is basically what I had read also. So if I was looking to purchase another lense, to get closer, what would you recommend. I love the quickness of the Nikon 2.8 zoom, also have the 28 to 70 nikon 2.8. I generally take shots of people from a distance, so as not to disturb their actions.

Ellen, go to the page I just told you, click on the home tab; then click on the photo equipment reviews, tests, features, overviews link; then click on performance survey lenses on the Nikkor AF-S & AI-S; then on The Lens Database query set it like this:

4.Nikon compatible.
13.All lenses
5.All lenses
1.Overall performance

and then click OK, and you will see a chart of the different lenses suitable for your Nikon camera including Sigma and Tamron!...

Here you will know what lenses do some vignetting, wich ones give flare, wich ones are warm or cool, wich ones are fast, wich ones are well built!...

And after you say I like this one because is great, then check if you have available cash in your bank account to buy it!...Some are way too expensive!...I'm not familiar with the prices of Nikon so I cannot say wich one is good for you, but based on the information you are going to find, then you check on some camera places in the internet, and you will see what the costs are!...
