Correct exposure of blue sky

I went to South Africa in October'99 & the sky had a washed out look to it. Sometimes the landscapes also looked a bit drained.I've bought a Hoya Cir-Polarizing filter 55mm. Will this solve the problem or will it just make everything darker?

I have the same experience when I first started shooting landscape and the image came out unacceptable. Then I read magazines to look for solutions. Using filters is one solution but you must know how to use the correct filters. For a plain white sky your circular polarizer will not help much because you need blue sky to enhance darker blue sky. Besides you must know how to use a polarizer properly. I learned from reading the Singapore NUS Photographic Club Web site in which Nelson Tan gave a very thorough and accurate way of using circular polarizer. After reading his explanation, I could now use the polarizer properly. If the sky is purely white and if you wish to make the image attractive, I suggest you need to use graduated coloured filters such as blue GC, Lilac or pink GC. I have used these before and found my pictures become more acceptable.
