Sepia Pictures

When sepia pictures are developed, are the negatives b&w or colour? From what I heard, it is either b&w negatives on colour paper or colour negatives on b&w paper. Which is correct? A quick response would be appreciated.

Usually, the sepia effect is created by taking a b&w negative and printing it in a special toner. There is a black and white film by Ilford, however, that can be processed in a color chemicals and printed on color paper with a slight tint so that it approximates sepia. Furthermore, this effect can now also be done nowadays with Photoshop or similar programs if you get your image digitized.
