Countdown to June Contest Results

Hello everyone…it’s time to start the June countdown. In the EP thread, Jim M recently said the contest winners would be posted by July 15, which if true, means Staff Favs are probably released by July 12th or 13th

Please share the photo you hope makes Staff Fav or higher.
If you’ve never participated in our thread or seldom participated, we’d love to hear from you.

I think BP has given out a lot of EPs for June, including the 2nd pass through. So, maybe we'll see more SFs, Finalists, and Winners. Good luck, everyone!

Some helpful hints for attaching photos into a BP Forum Thread, if you're unfamiliar with the process:

1) Sign into BP. IF YOU HAVEN'T entered the Contest for today, you can use the "Photo ID" method to pull an existing image (from your Member Center) into your reply here.
a. Jot down the PhotoID # of the photo you wish to share. To determine your PhotoID, go to the little Pancakes icon, then click “My Photos”, then “Manage/Enter.” The PhotoID is right below the number.

b. Go to the Countdown Contest thread. Click “Respond” at the bottom of the page.

c. Type in whatever you wish; e.g., “Here’s my Fav image for the month.”

d. Click the “Select” button below the text input box, and select “1.” Toggle on “Notify” box if you wish to be notified. Click “Submit.”

e. The Image Uploader appears. On the right-hand side, you’ll see an input box for the PhotoID (from step 1a). Type it in then click “submit your photo.” Then, return to the forum thread and you’ll see your photo.

2) IF YOU HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest for today, you can't use the Photo ID method *today*. Either wait until tomorrow to reply here first, or upload a copy of the image (from your PC) and attach to this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.

3) If you're uploading a duplicate, I suggest titling it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later on. This can also help nudge BP viewers to go find the original image in your gallery, if they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, first try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate... which may one day be deleted.

I've already posted my real favorite here and it's on its third resubmission in search of some bling, so I'll go with something else. I think this Chicago pier dawn is my personal favorite with an EP; for entries without an EP, I'll go with this self-possessed farm cat.

Hi Nikki, welcome aboard! Such a nice tranquil scene for Chicago, and I saw the other guy with the tripod but you had the better comp. And the cat photo with its effects, is certainly worthy of an EP. Good luck in the SF round!

I am going with these two selections this month.

The first is of my grandson taken last October at Atlantic Beach NC. One of those perfect timing shots that can't be duplicated!

My second is from a bicycle race in our down town business district that occurs annual. Obviously a lot of post processing here but I like the results.

Hi Beth and Errick, welcome to the countdown thread!

Beth, nice creative take with the flower. It's eye-catching and certainly frame-worthy.

Errick, I love the bicycle one...very nice effects with this. And you can't beat the grandson photo, for a lifetime of memories.

Good luck to both of you in the next round!

It's kind of counter-intuitive, Melinda, and I have no idea how someone discovered it but . . .
You get your photo ID's copied on a clipboard or open extra windows so they are right there for you to copy and paste.
You write your response and select "1" when it asks for the number of images you want to add.
Now you submit and put the id of one in the box. Check off the "terms" box and submit.
Now you use the BROWSER BACK button on your computer. That will take you back to the submit page. Delete the first ID number and replace it with the 2nd. Check off the "terms" box if you need to (can't remember for sure but I think it may stay checked). Submit again.

That should do it.

99
Muslims remember God with 99 names in Arabic, with each name evincing a specific attribute of God. The number 99 seen on the board in the oldest mosque in Egypt, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As (originally built in 641–642 AD, as the center of the then newly founded capital of Egypt, i.e, Cairo) was coincidental though.

After saying my prayers, I couldn't resist and fetched my camera to capture the wonderful light falling on the columns and the arches.

My 10-stop neutral density filter arrived this week, and tonight I popped down to the nearby stream to find something which could test it out. The little cascade was in the open shade of about 7pm; the sun still up. The normal exposure would have been about 1/40th. The ND filter stretched it to 25 seconds.

Echoes
Echoes
I ventured up to the musician's gallery, a platform above the Great Choir seats. I was struck how this subset of organ pipes came to a point, echoing the gothic arched window beyond. But the line of pipes created a concave curving line up to the point. Then, I saw how the downward curving line of the pipes diminishing in size, met and echoed the curvature of the window's arch; where the stone line and the pipe line met, a sort of sideways, squat gothic arch formed, which I rather liked.

Hi folks; best of luck in the June results!
I see some others posting favorite pairs, so I'll do the same.
1. Long-exposure water shot; A favorite just because it was from my very first outing with a new 10-stop ND filter (the day the filter arrived in the mail!) purchased for use on an upcoming Oregon coast road trip later this summer.
2. Cathedral organ pipes; A favorite because even after 20 years as a volunteer tour guide, I'd never once stepped foot up into the musician's gallery above the choir seats, to see this view.

Hi Dayna, Susan, Peggy, Usman, Lola, and Chris. Welcome to the countdown thread…and lots of great photos adorning the forum page.

Dayna, a super bling…and the color combo is perfect, along with the yellow interior of the flower.

Susan, you got great details for entire comp and the black background really sets off the lily.. Very pretty!

Peggy, nice elements and a great category for this. Looks like we’re counting down: 104, 103, 102…SFs Thursday! :-)

Usman, great job with the black/white and leading lines for “99.” And lucky you…the Himalayas. I would love to photograph Pakistan’s mountains.

Lola…such a vibrant gazania. Exquisite colors and details.

Chris, I love how the 10-stop really smoothed out this water. Superb in B/W. And…20 years until you stepped foot in the musician’s gallery? Geez…what else have you been avoiding at the Cathedral? :-) Nice lines/patterns.

Good luck to all of you in the next round!

Hi Carolyn and Teresa, welcome to the countdown thread. :-)

Carolyn, you’ve always done an exquisite job with the water drops; no exception here. Radiant! And welcome back to this thread. :-)

Teresa, very nice symmetry on your Grote photo. And it’s great to keep learning new skills in PS and to dig old photos out of the archives to edit them again.

Good luck to both of you in the next round. Earlier, Jim M said it’d be around the 15th so hopefully soon!

The EP rate seemed higher than normal as compared to previous months. However, SFs and finalists seemed lower. SFs was 4.8% rate while finalists was 3.2%.

The silver lining...if you got a finalist (and there were only 199), then you have a 55.7% chance that it gets gold, which is a pretty high rate compared to other months.

Congrats to all that got a SF and Finalist...and good luck in the gold medal round!

Hi all, I'm late to the finalist party too!
My fave became a finalist ... So for June I entered a whopping four photos ... 100% EPs ... 25% finalists ... less really is more!
Congrats to all with SF and/or finalist, and best of luck in the next round! :)

I had many EPs but just one SF that did not advance to Finalist. There are so many talented photograhers here that I'm just glad to be in the running at any level. Good luck to all the Finalists! Can't wait to see the Golds come out.

Bob, you should also Google "Crystal Ball Photography" and check the images. I got mine at Amazon, $16. Here's a link:

Thanks, Ken, my crystal ball will be arriving on Saturday! It looks to be about as much fun as I've had with "Touchable Bubbles".....
Congrats, too, on your first place gold, and all the other winners, and players... :-)

  Thanks, Jim!! :-)

Bob, just be sure NOT to hold the ball in your hand, in bright sun. Effectively, it's magnifying glass and you'll soon learn what I mean. Ouch!

It comes with a square, small holder. Often, I placed the square holder (about 1 inch square) on my tripod face mount, leveled...then place the ball on top of the square holder. That way, the ball is still while you compose your shot. But other interesting shots are available by folks holding it...or you holding it during your photo.

Ken...I went out to play with the crystal ball just a bit ago. OMG! I held it in the sun, and after about just one second, my finger was on fire!!! Lesson learned... :-)

I'd thought, before that happened, about putting the crystal ball in a pile of sun lit leaves to see what it looked like.....good thing I just scorched a finger instead of burning the house down.......

Nikki, you're so right. It's like your kids...you can tell them all day long..."don't hold the magnifying crystal ball in your hands, in the bright sun cause you'll get a piercing burn."

Bob, don't feel bad; I think all crystal ball photographers have learned from experience. The bad thing would be if you gave it to a little kid to hold it and they may not fully comprehend what's happening and think all is OK because the adult said to hold it. I about made that mistake then wife said "Ken, she can't hold that ball outside in the sun." So, I was the little kid then. :-)

Sooo, how did your photos turn out?
