The issue of releases hinges on the event. Was the Music Festival a public event? Best if it is a free public event. Then you really don't really need a model release. To the extent you move to other shades of events is the extent you might need the release. It also depends on information you might release. Do you identify the musician? Do you make $$$ using the photo? The model release is an attempt to make things bullet proof regarding your use of the photo.
