Countdown to February Contest Results

Hello Everyone! It's the 15th of March and time to share our favorite contest image(s) from February. If it makes Staff Fav/Finalist/Winner, all the better. So give your favorites a showcase here, tell us why you picked them, and join us in the countdown!

Going off memory, I think February had nearly 6,800 images which is more than January, even with only 28 days. So, that’s a good thing…more photos. But we are nearly halfway thru March, and the rate is lower than in Feb.

BP has already gone thru the Feb EPs, and they may take another pass before they announce Staff Favs. And hopefully this month, we’ll see Staff Favs by March 21st.

So, upload your Fav photo(s) then join us as we await the contest results. Good luck everyone!

Some helpful hints for attaching photos into a BP Forum Thread, if you're unfamiliar with the process:

1) Sign into BP. IF YOU HAVEN'T entered the Contest for today, you can use the "Photo ID" method to pull an existing image (from your Member Center) into your Reply here. This avoids a duplicate image upload to your Member Center. Note the Photo ID# of the image you wish to include here (visible in your Member Center) then return to this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, and choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down (even though you won't actually be uploading a file.) Click Submit; at the next screen, populate the "Photo ID" field shown over at the right. Skip the other text fields on that screen, check the boxes at the bottom, and Submit.

2) IF YOU HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest for today, you can't use the Photo ID method *today*. Either wait until tomorrow to reply here first, or upload a copy of the image (from your PC) and attach to this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.

If you're uploading a duplicate, I suggest titling it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later on. This can also help nudge BP viewers to go find the original image in your gallery, if they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, first try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate... which may one day be deleted.

Highlighted Comment: Welcome Peggy, Michelle, Usman, and Nikki!

Peggy, I'm so glad I took a typing class in high-school. It's such a skill to have, versus keyboarding with one finger on each hand. Very nice tones on your photo.

Usman, a mesmerizing photo. And I've used the oil paint filter too; it's pretty cool. After this cold winter, I'm ready for a little sun and your flower is step 1!

Nikki, a fantastic portrait. I sure hope we see this one again. And what a beautiful day it was today in Omaha..but all things end as the cold front just went thru and a chance of snow/rain tonight. Lovely!

Chris, Usman was optimistic about my weekend optimism. Thankfully we didn't take any bets that Staff Favs would be released this weekend. So, maybe we should bet on Wednesday? :-)

Last month, Staff Favs were announced on the 23rd, or 5 days before the end of the month. If they announce on Wednesday (based on Chris' optimism), then that's 5 days before the end of March. So, Wednesday it is! :-)

Being on a diet makes the wait for the SFs a bit harder since I am not eating anything with manufactured sugar in it. I guess now fruits and honey are the only other sweet options left for me, which isn't that bad either!!!

And I would love and welcome SFs coming out even earlier than Wednesday ;-)

I had stopped checking by early March and haven't submitted an entry since the end of Feb. and when I checked today I had three Eps that weren't there when I last checked. A surprise but not terribly exciting since I've never gotten beyond three Finalists. My favorite for Feb. is the "dark-eyed" junco.

Good luck everyone.

Beth, for the last couple of months, BP has made another pass-thru on the photos and handed out more EPs. So, never be discouraged if the first pass-thru skips some photos.

I like your Junco photo. It's amazing that birds can handle snow and bitterly cold. We've had wind chills -30F and doesn't seem to impact them at all.

Hi everyone, congrats to those that got finalists! The selection rate was 9%, as compared to 6% last month.

And Carolyn, no I definitely didn't get 15 finalists. And your 7 finalists are certainly a good show, even if you aren't showing off either. :-)

And for those that participated in our Countdown thread but didn't get a finalist, I hope next month will be better. We are all gifted in our photography.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the last day in March, so if you're in the habit of copying your contest submissions, don't forget.

And April 1st marks the transition from Catch All to Man Made. Per Jim's comments on the "Man Made" forum topic, the category includes Architecture,
Transportation (planes, trains and automobiles), and Industry.

Finally, next month's theme is "Back to Basics."

Good luck in April and we'll reconvene April 15th (American tax day) for the March countdown.

Usman, like most BP themes, it's open to our interpretation. Here's a quick google search for "Back to Basics."

1. Stressing simplicity and adherence to fundamental principles: The movement suggests a back-to-basics approach to living for those whose lives have become complicated.

2. Emphasizing or based upon the teaching of such basic subjects as reading, arithmetic, grammar, or history in a traditional way.

Thanks Ken, but I am afraid trying to figure out subject/(s) that would be a good fit for this theme still eludes me.

  Thanks Usman, Peggy, and Chris.

For those that aren't following the "Man-Made" forum thread, BP has publicly stated that Resubmits are now allowed.

Usman and Carolyn...ref the theme. I was thinking about this while driving home today. I don't submit many photos into the theme, because the themes are generally out of my comfort zone for outdoor landscapes. But, maybe we can all step out of our box for this.

One way of portraying "Back to Basics" is to contrast the simple ways of life to our fast-paced, techno driven environment. For example, how about a photo of a manual camera (now that's back to basics for understanding shutter speed and aperture for exposure), with some modern-day cameras (or cell phones) in the background, out of focus.

Or, an elementary student working on a math problem using a pencil and paper, while mom/dad are in background keying in the same problem on the computer monitor, pulling their hair out.

Or a rotary dial phone because the cell phone accidentally dropped into the small fish-bowl adjacent to grandmother's phone.

I know these ideas are rather silly, but hopefully they'll get you to thinking of something creative. So, I would encourage all of us to step out of our box and give it a creative shot!

Thanks for some interesting ideas on the MT, Ken.

How about a hand shot holding a rose with a perfume in the background with focus on the rose, shot with a shallow dof.
I might eventually enter the MT this month ;)

UB.

Usman, that's the nice thing about theme; it's open to interpretation and many directions you can go. Sounds like you're onto something!
