May Countdown Thread

Well, well, well...time got away from me. First, I was counting the days until the 15th so I could start this thread, and then, suddenly, I realize, I'm late! Ooops! Sorry, all. Summer has officially started here (no more school for the kids) and that means company, sleepovers, and just lots of general busy stuff for this Mama.

I see that they have picked up the pace on handing out the May EPs, so I hope that means they are busy at work prepping to pick the finalists and winners.

It's nice and toasty here in Texas, so I guess I'll grab a cool beverage and start waiting for results. Fingers crossed for us all!

Helpful hints for attaching photos into Forum Threads:
1) Sign into BP completely (name + password.)
2) If you have NOT YET entered the Contest today, you can use the "Photo ID" to pull an existing image from your Member Center into your reply to this thread (avoiding a duplicate image upload.) Get the Photo ID# from your Member Center, come to back this thread, click Respond, enter the text of your reply, then choose "1" from the images-to-attach drop-down. Click Submit; at the next screen populate the "Photo ID" box at the right. Skip the other fields on that screen.
3) If you HAVE ALREADY entered the Contest today before replying to this thread, you can't use the Photo ID method today. You can either wait until tomorrow to reply here (before your new Contest entry!) or, upload a new copy of the particular image (from your PC) into this thread. This produces a duplicate image in your Member Center; however, you don't have to make that duplicate visible in your Gallery.
4) If you're uploading a duplicate, maybe title it "For Forum" so it stands out in your Member Center, for easier housecleaning later... This can help direct viewers to find the original image in your gallery, when they want to leave a comment. Likewise, if you want to add a comment to a photo seen here, try to tell if it is a duplicate upload. As a courtesy, try to find the original image in the member's gallery and leave your comment there instead of on the duplicate---that way, if the duplicate is deleted later, the comment history isn't lost.

Good luck everyone!!!

May had some new entries and quite a few resubs. I'm tempted to pick my same favorite from last month (it really is one of my favorites of my baby girl), but...

instead, I'll try this re-edit of an older image of Kate. I can't believe this same little girl is now the teenager I have who likes to sleep late, and is starting to take lots of pics just like Mama.

oh, and my May entries are bookmarked by pics of my daughter starting with "My Dreamer" and going through "daydreams"

A tough one to pick... What was perhaps my top most-hopeful/favorite from my May entries was actually skipped over for an EP, so there's not much point in hoping it will go on... ;)
In that case, another favorite (from about 3 or 4 others I'm really crossing all my fingers on!) is this slot canyon wall shot.
Best of luck to everyone in the May results!

They appear to be "going back" for a final check of May images - 3 of my previously-skipped images for early May, picked up EP's in the last 2 days (well after June EP's began appearing.) Including the skipped one I just really, really loved... so I'm adding it here -- hopefully no jinx! ;)

Kelena a beautiful young lady that won the Amelia Earhart scholarship.

She has her private pilot license and the scholarship will pay for her instrument rating.

We got the privilege to use an airplane similar to what Amelia might have flown for our photo shoot.

WE had so much fun and got some wonderful images for the magazine and for the Amelia Earhart museum.

My favorite for the month of May is of a young lady Kelena. She received the Amelia Earhart Scholarship. She has her private pilot license but the scholarship will pay for her instrument rating.

The photo's I took will be in the Amelia Earhart museum and the 99 magazine.

She was fun to shoot.

A weird month for me. "Stuff" kept my entries at 8, with 4 EPs and that includes 1 showing up in the last 24 hrs. So, here is my shot in the dark ;) Good luck to all!

  Sadly, I forgot again today.
Where are the Finalists, three more days till month's end!! Maybe the judges are waiting for me to post here, LOL. Lets see who makes it first.

My favorite this month is the accidental capture of the parrots in Australia. Its titled "21 Galahs".

In case, you would like to take a peek at my May entries, they start from "Dream World-II" on page 2 to "Lying Low" on page 3.

Good luck to all in the May contest.

Finalists came out last night---congratulations, everyone!
I had to chuckle---the 6/19 comment I made here initially, about a favorite being skipped for EP---then a later comment on 6/21, when that image actually got an EP, "late"---that image was one of my 5 to make Finalist! Woohoo!

Has anyone noticed that some of the finalists are from 2009? I do not think they were resubs, as all responses on these photos were dated in 2009, EXCEPT those of the Judges. Seems that possibly there were not as many photos as we are told to judge in each category, and they are going back to fill their Quotas for each category-hmmm, a real mystery!

I suspect you're seeing resubs. You'd be surprised how far back some folks go in their archives, especially if they don't have new material ready. I think I've resubbed from 2+ years back, in the past.

Nancy, I agree with Chris. Lots of people resub from years ago, as do I. That's why you don't see new comments, because most likely, these photos are not towards the front of the member's galleries, and they don't show up in the front pages of the "New Contest" entries. If someone did get a surprise finalist from years ago, please chime in.

  RULES CHANGE:
I also wanted to let you know that, as of today, we're not going to allow re-entry of photos. Only enter a photo once. When you go to enter again and again (which we encourage), use different photos.

The intention of the contest is to help us all get out creating more often. Every single photo is examined by more than one of our pro judges; if your great photo doesn't make it to the final rounds, don't allow yourself to feel bad about it. Just take it to mean the competition was steep...and BE INSPIRED to keep trying, with different photos.

My dream is to see your photography get better and better, and to see you continue to have a great time making great photos.

Keep up the awesome shooting and thanks again for the inspiration!

Thanks,
Jim

Well, if that's not the biggest bunch of bull crap, I don't know what would qualify. They leave half of the people's excellent work without even an EP and then tell them they can't try again. I can't even believe my eyes on that one!

Wow, I'm not sure what to think about the "rule change" on resubs. Scratching my head as to how it helps us "get out and create more often" unless there have been a fair amount of members entering the same images again and again each month. So many that bp decided they needed to stop it?

Certainly by saying "we prefer that you enter new material!" that would hopefully nudge folks to continue shooting new stuff, vs searching their archives of previously-entered favorites that never won. So I think there's definitely a nudge built-in there, that some members will take upon themselves to up their game and produce more/new/different stuff.

I still face the problem of emotional attachment to my images (which has a built-in danger for anyone entering their art into any judged contest!) -- and that attachment is especially strong when I produce an image I really, really love (vs. all the rest that I really, really like! {grin}) I would definitely be inclined to resubmit, when a beloved image doesn't go anywhere in the contest... And I have done that, certainly!

But to Jim's point, how does that emotional attachment, and my resulting resubmits of increasing "old" images, help my photography grow or change, if I just end up resubmitting stuff, endlessly? (OK, I never took it that far, to be what I'd call "endlessly" resubmitting my images... but sure, I've resubmitted plenty, spread out over the years! In fact, I've got a spreadsheet of every entry I ever made, over 7 years, and 23% of my "medals" came on a resubmit.)

Susan, I will say that, in my personal opinion, the April & May entries seemed to have a much, much higher percentage of overall resubmits from BP Members than I was used to seeing, and, what seemed to include many more direct resubmits of past Finalists and/or Winners... (I've not adopted that approach before; if I land a Finalist or a Win, that image is done in the BP contest, as far as I'm concerned. Unless I found a major flaw in the first version, after the fact, that I think warrants a re-edit and new entry.)

Chris, your number crunching always amazes me! I also suspect there was a larger than usual number of resubs in April and May. After all, most of us have felt a bit confused as to the judging with the efp and timing changes. We saw many entries that would have previously garnered an efp amd I have no doubt many of those got resubmitted. I think I resubbed two (and neither got an efp the second time either). As to resubbing a finalist or winner I've never done that either. I'm guessimg they were seeing way too mamy, imcludimg past finalists and winners.

The thing that bothers me the most I guess, is the way EP's are now being done. For example, I entered a photo on May 10th that did not get an EP (or so I thought) because entries WAY past the 10th did have EP's. I just assumed this particular photo had been skipped so I re-entered it in June. After I had re-entered this pic in June, it then turns up with an EP and I assumed because I got the EP in June that it was for June! I then received a finalist. I now have a pic that got a finalist for May in the June contest! People are going to think I'm crazy but I promise I thought the photo had been skipped. I just wish the EP's weren't so far behind and so out of order. I hope at least part of this rant made sense. LOL

You're not crazy, and it made sense to me---Because EXACTLY that same scenario happened to me in May, too---image skipped for EP---even so late that my June 1 entry got an EP. So I (wrongfully) assumed May EP review was done. Thus I re-submitted it (it is an image I love!) into June. Then, it got a May EP (as did 3 other May skips)---then it got a May Finalist this past weekend!

So now one of my June entries is in fact an unintentional re-entry of a May Finalist... My first-ever "resubmit of a Finalist"---and it was accidental!

It happened to me as well! I got really confused...

I am ok not re-entering images. There was a follow up email that says that if an image is "substantially" re-worked it can be considered a "new" image.
