People's Choice

Wouldn't it be fun if after the finalists are posted for the month that BP members could cast one vote for their favorite photo out of the judges finalist selections and whoever received the most votes would have a "People's Choice" badge under it? Just a thought....what do you all think?

Some photo sites have something like this: in way it would be a good chance to get noticed (then, more people would look at Finalists), but the problem could be that it may become a vote-fishing/popularity contest: those with more friends will probably get more votes, thus some people might start commenting hundreds of photos to get more friends and, thus, more votes. As commenting takes time, this will probably result in lots of short or copy-paste comments (e.g. "cool" to every photo).

You are probably right Tiia. I never thought about it that way.

Tiia is right. There's always that perception when there is voting involved. Not that I ever enter contests except for here, but if I did, I wouldn't enter one where the population of the site votes. Too much clickishness...(if that's a word)

I think you'd likely run into some of that, in a members-voting situation. Maybe more so at BP, where we're very much a fun, friendly, chatty community of like-minded photographers---and I mean that as a contrast to some of the photo sites whose members are 100% competitive, critical (in an analyzing or scrutinizing or technical perfection way.)
Perhaps you could reduce the impact of "best friends" voting (instead of "best image" voting) by saying for example, if you're going to participate, you must vote for 20 images, and no more than 2 can come from the same photographer. Something along those lines perhaps...

I was thinking one vote per member. You would look at all the finalists, pick your favorite out of those finalists and cast one vote. I do it every month anyway. I just don't get to actually "vote" and it's always kept to myself. If each member had only ONE vote and there was no way of knowing who voted for whom, (did I say that correctly? lol) I think that would be pretty fair. Like I said, I choose my favorite each month anyway out of the judges finalist selections and think to myself...THIS is the photo I would choose! I have alot of photographers on this site that I watch, a few that I am friendly with but when I look at those finalists and see that one photo that just absolutely blows me away, friend or not, that's whose photo I would vote for.

Good point...! One vote would also go a long way to knocking out "BFF" votes ;)

Interesting idea, Dayna! I agree with the issues raised but also agree that community feedback is important. We do have the "Add to My Favorite Photos" option. I use this to express appreciation of those images that really blow me away. When I review finalists, I use it to provide feedback to the photographers, and also as a reference for myself to review and learn from those images that impress me the most. Unfortunately people using the old-style galleries don't have an easy way to see which of their photos were Faved.

Sounds like a great idea to me. How about allowing one vote for a favorite per photo category instead of just one overall??? Just a thought.

Who has time to go through all those finalists?

Honestly, I would not like to see the contest on this site being influenced by any kind of ‘Vote’.
