Puerto Rico Locales

My wife and I may go to Puerto Rico within the next several months. If anyone has insights for places to visit, or lodging on the beach that is nice, please let me know. I will do my own web research too but it's nice to hear from folks that have already been to PR. Thanks so much!

Ken

  Hi Ken,
A co-worker (from PR) that sits behind me suggested the site http://www.seepuertorico.com/
He is a younger chap and asked what you want to do ? He knows some of the younger kids clubs but said its a quick trip into the rain forest. PR is about 110 x 40 miles so it aint that big :)
http://www.topuertorico.org/exploring.shtml has a map and the rain forest is in the middle - December thru April is the "high" season when all the snowbirds flock to escape the frigid temps. There are old Spanish colonial villages and other historical places. I asked if there were any (gotta see this) places and he said it just depends on what you like - there are no iconic places but Science Park has spectacular views (nest to San Juan in Bayamon).
I'll bug him for more info later :)
Cheers,
Carlton

  Hey Ken,
We spent a week in Puerto Rico this past summer. We stayed at the Las Casita Villages (not the hotel) in Fajardo, PR., it was beautiful and pristine. They have their own private island/beach Palimino Island which was never crowded, and since it's off the mainland the reefs are easily accessable and provide great snorkeling. We did go into old historical San Juan for a day, we toured the Fort (very cool but I can't remember the name off hand)although it's a beautiful city it wasn't easy to get around in, lots of construction and lots, of traffic, but worth it. I would have to say the best thing we did was the Acampa Toro Negro Rainforest full day adventure, which included hiking, climing up a waterfall and 7 zip lines, not to mention the amazing authentic home cooking they serve for lunch. (the small outfit that runs this tour was awesome). Several of the local people said that Culebra(sp?)Island was a must but since they didn't sell the ferry tickets in advance by the time we got there the line was around the block and sold out...So make sure you go really, really early in the am. Also we did the bio-luminesent tours not exactly what we envisioned (or even close to the pictures they advertise with), the canal used to get to the lagoon was very dark and extremely crowded the tours seem to be run by what I would term as renegade outfitters, the week after we were there a woman fell out out of her kayak and was attacked by a shark in the lagoon, I'm not sure if any of these outfitters were even equipped to handle this type of emergency. All and all it was a great vacation with plenty of adventure for us. We made sure to eat most of our meals at off the beaten path restaurants that we found through Trip Advisor. I'm still craving fried plantains! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Lynn
