How to use a light meter for portraits

Should I take a measurement from the point where I'm taking the picture (measure of the light coming to the camera) or should I put the light meter (oritented to the camera) at the place of the subject to measure the light that is coming on the subject (and if so, do I directly put the values shown by the device on my camera)?

You don't tell us what kind of meter you're using (incident or reflective). I'm going to assume from your question it's an incident meter. In which case you want to meter the light that is falling on your subject. Whatever reading you get can be fed right into your camera (so to speak).
