Photography Question

Linda Sandbo

What camera for closeups of skin

Hello to all, I have a friend that is a dermatologist and would like to get a better camera for her office... they take closeups of their patient's skin conditions... it is a very busy practice, needs to be relatively simple to use, don't need any mega pixels.. the images are stored in the office EMR and she does not want to use anymore storage than necessary...Unfortunately, it would be several nurses that would use the camera, so needs to be user friendly, etc... I have a few ideas, but my ideas are expensive... I love my lens... So, HELP.... thanks in advance, Linda

How expensive is expensive. You could find a point and shoot type that does close focusing, probably in the $350. She could use examining lights for the lighting to take the pictures.
What kind of camera was she using before?

She is currently using the Nikon Coolpix.. it is several years old... Honestly, I think the camera is fine, but the nurses are always in a hurry and need something that is point and shoot and a little more user friendly.. She would probably spend up to $500.00 if it would help the nurses with the ease of use... the lighting is basic.. no overhead specialty lights, etc... just overhead flourescents... etc .. The nurses do not understand aperture, etc.. etc.. what they need is a camera that will do the job in auto mode and hopefully, they will handle the focus part... I'm frustrated, my hands are tied.. wish I could take the pics for her, but it is what it is... she has to rely on her nurses and medical assistants to take these closeups of pathology....

Seems like a Coolpix would fit right in to being user simple and user friendly.
This might actually be over board for her, but I bet she could use anything like a PowerShot SX30 IS
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx30_is#Specifications
It sounds like they would need a screen instead of looking thru a viewfinder to aim. It also has a close focusing distance. This would be at the top end. There are cameras maybe a third less that she could probably use just as well. I'm more familiar with Canons. There's a Nikon that would be similar.
Tell the nurses not to throw away the instruction manual, whatever they decide to get.

Right, I agree. Funny you should say the Canon PowerShot.. I was just looking at that one for them.... I'm a Canon girl, but as I said, the Nikon is fine, but I'm just searching for something that they can set in auto mode, FOCUS, and shoot... there is only so much we can do...but, thanks for your input and help.. I will pass this along... and I think part of the problem is that the nurses just don't know how to acquire the macro shots..The doctor thinks that a new camera is the answer, but I'm not so sure... the nurses are always in a hurry and most of the images are somewhat blurred if they are closeups..I just hate to tell her to buy a $400.00 camera and have the same problem.....

The blurry pictures is why I brought up the examining lights. If she doesn't have those lights like you see in the dentist or doctors office(the curved kind on the retractable arm) then she's going to need something with a very high max iso in order to shoot closeups and not be blurred with just regular room lights. I know they're not going to want to use a tripod.
Otherwise, she could get something that easy to use like a Canon Rebel and macro lens with macro flash, and she'd pretty much just have to get the camera set right for taking pictures a few inches away, and leave it like that. But that's over $500 worth.
Just check for point and shoots, look at the specs and see what the minimum focusing distances are, and what the iso ranges are.

All this is true.... I've tried to have little mini sessions with them.. but being in a busy office and seeing the amount of patients that she sees in a day, the girls just do what they can .. I'm not agreeing with this.. just know what's going on... No good lights, and tripod is out of the question... maybe if I talk her into a new camera... keep it in aperture mode and use high ISO's , maybe they can do this... just too many handling the camera... I know I'm asking for a miracle camera that will do it for the girls... feel sorry for them and the doc... she actually submits to very high profile journals each year.. she is just so disappointed in her pics.... I will tell her what we discussed... I've actually had this same discussion a few years back for her on this forum... thanks again...

I purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 about a month ago to take on a trip when I didn't want to lug all my equipment through airports. I used the macro settings-there are two, one of which is AF. I took pictures of my new granddaughter and a macro of a plant with a ladybug on it. Both are in the Editor's Picks this month. It is a 12X optical zoom with and extended zoom up to 48X (gets a little "noisy at that magnification, though). Check it out online, or at BH Photo. I love this camera. It has a wide angleLeica lens.

Hi Nancy, thanks for the input.. I will pass this along to my doctor friend... she is looking for something that has IS and is user friendly for her nurses... they are not photographers and just need good images of pathology on the skin... thanks again... Linda
