Printer issues

I haven’t visited the site in a long time – life taking some different directions – but, because I remember the folks here as very helpful, I’m back asking for some help.
For weeks I’ve been struggling to get my Canon photo printer and newer computer to communicate properly. I’ve had numerous conversations with the folks at Canon and with the folks at Adobe and yet, thus far, we have been unable to successfully resolve the problem. I’m hoping the more experienced photographers here might provide some ideas.
The printer is the Canon i9900 using an updated driver to be fully compatible with Win 7 -64bit. The computer in question is a Dell running Windows 7 64 bit. The printer is connected to the CPU via a USB cable. I use Photoshop CS5 to edit my RAW photo files. I use the Spyder Pro 3 to calibrate the monitor. The issue: no matter what type file is sent to the printer the printer does not print correctly. I am not referring to colors being off or smearing or anything else that might point to a calibration error. Instead, images print completely unrecognizable. I wish I could upload a sample image; however, unfortunately, my scanner is also on the brink and I’m awaiting a replacement. However, as an example: I have an image of several birds in a tree. The image printed as splotches of light color intermingled with darker lines and splashes of brighter color.
Okay – this is where it gets even more complicated. I have a 2nd computer that also prints to this printer. That system also runs Windows 7-64 bit and PSCS5. When printing from this system the only issue I encounter is when I fail to correctly calibrate the monitor. Otherwise, the images print correctly.
What’s been done (as recommended by Canon and/or Adobe): uninstall and reinstall the software; uninstall and reinstall the updated driver; clean the printer jets and reset the printer calibration; realign the printer heads; in PS select “PS controls color”; switch out the USB with another USB cable. None of these steps have changed anything about how the printer works.
Finally – if I send the image to another printer, it prints correctly. The problem is that the second printer is not a true photo printer and the results do not match the quality of the Canon printer.
So, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks folks!

Don't get me wrong, I love my Canon Camera, Printer, and ColorMunki Calibrator, but once in awhile, they do not cooperate with each other. My printer decided just the other day, before I left on a trip, to quit printing all together. I tried getting hold of Canon, but they do not have the best support system for their products-I have a 9500 Mk II PixmaPro printer and have had several things go wrong with it. If I hadn't figured out what was wrong with it, I'd still be waiting for Canon. I haven't cleaned the print heads lately. That's the last thing I'll try before calling Best Buy's Geek Squad. Granted it will cost you, but less than you'll pay for a new printer. They will make house calls, too. Because I love the Canon Printer's output-gorgeous colors. However, in the future, I may revert back to Epson--they have a new 10 color high end professional printer coming out this year. Epson has better customer service for their printers than Canon ever has. That's my 2 cents. If you give up after you've done all you can, remember to call for outside help.

Try using another program to print through to try and narrow down the issue. Try using Canon's software or download a trial version of a program like QIMAGE or maybe even Lightroom and try printing through it. I think you will see different results. I have a feeling that it's a driver conflict issue and even though you do an uninstall, there are still some files that remain. Just a thought and good luck.

One more thing. Make sure you plugged directly into a USB port and are not plugged into a USB hub. I had that problem several years ago.

  Irene,

There is a program at http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html that lets you view and uninstall USB devices, including the remains of devices you don't have any more. Perhaps an uninstall, followed by use of this tool, and then reinstall, may help.

Are you using the Canon-supplied installer or are you letting the add devices program go out and find a driver? I just saw a case where the latter choice installed a bad version.

Your testing shows pretty well that the printer is good, and the image file is good. The problem is in the computer. Randy's suggestion to try a different program will narrow it even more.

You selected "PS controls color". Did you also UNSELECT color management in the print driver? Although usually the problem this causes is just a shift in color, not the extreme problem you describe.

Best of luck to you,
Kevin

Thanks, Randy. I tried the hub to computer change and now my Canon Printer works--colors and everything. I'm happy I won't have to spend a lot for a new Pro printer, although the next printer I get will be an Epson.

Thank-you, everyone, for your ideas and proposed solutions. I apologize for taking so long to get back here. I’ve been traveling and life sort-of gets out of control when I’m on the road.
Oddly enough, after trying every solution offered and a whole lot more, when I left home the printer still wouldn’t print correctly. I returned yesterday and just for the heck of it, I tried printing a sample this morning and surprise, surprise! The printer is now working correctly. I have no clue what happened. No one used the printer in my absence and nothing was done after I gave up a few weeks ago. The only remaining problem seems to be an issue of monitor calibration using the Spyder pro and Windows 7. Looks like I have to upgrade my Spyder device to match the new WIN 7 profiles.
Once again, thanks for the help!
