Photography Question

lens hood

I have gotten a 77mm B+W circular polarizing filter and in order to also use it with my 70-200mm f/4 I got a step down ring. My question is what size - if any - lens hood can I use with that? The orginal one is too small and the one for my 24-105mm lens is too big. Thanks

  Cathy,

I believe that you have a step up ring. It probably has on it 67-77. If your 24-105 lens also takes a 67mm filter you only need to screw the CPL onto the step up ring and use it on both lenses. Your hard lens hoods are impossible to use with this setup. Purchase a 77mm rubber collapsible hood and screw it onto the CPL. Then you just need to turn the hood to get the amount of polarization that you desire. If your 24-105 uses 58mm filters than a 58-77mm step up ring is necessary. I am not sure that a ring is made in that size. If not you will need both a 58-67 attached to a 67-77 ring. Again using the 77mm, filter size, rubber lens hood.

A step down ring is when the filter is smaller than what the lens normally uses, i.e. 67-58. I have no idea why anyone would use them except for a special effect.

Thanks! no my 24-105mm takes the 77 mm filter and the 70-200 uses the 67mm. Didn't know if it was called step up or down thanks for the clarification. Will be looking for the 77mm rubber lens hood. Thanks again.

  Hi Cathy,
Trade your 70-200 f/4 for a 70-200 f/2.8 and you wont need the step up ring as it too is 77mm :) All of my lenses are 77mm and I did this so that they would all fit my B+W Circular Polarizer.
I'm kidding and the step ring will work but a 67mm lens hood wont fit over a 77mm filter.
BUT - I have a solution and its a very good solution as its dual purpose. Its an Opteka 77mm Collapsible rubber lens hood. I just tried it on my B+W 77mm Kaeseman CP filter and its not easy but it does screw in. I cant remember if my CP is the regular or thin version (it is pretty thin) but it cost $178 at B&H.

77mm Rubber Lens hood

The hood is also a great thing to have at an aquarium or places where you are shooting through glass and the rubber snugs against the glass and keeps the reflections in check. I use it on all of my lenses (except my wide angles) and it also collapses in a fashion that it will fit in a 1 inch space or pocket.

Cheers,
Carlton

Yes, an accessory rubber hood is a good idea ... IF the filter has threads on the front of it.

Some do, some do not.

If it does not, then you would not be able to attach the rubber lens hood to it.

  Thanks Peter
Yes it does so it looks to work with it.
