Composition Question

My son wants to give my parents a portrait for Christmas, and he asked me to take the picture. I typically photograph "things" and use natural light. I'm very interesting in learning more about lighting and people, but I have a long way to go.

Anyhow, here's my portrait of my son. It doesn't follow the rule of thirds - his eyes are a bit above the middle of photo. If I wanted to get them closer to the top third, I'd crop Jason's head. Which is better - leave it as it is, or crop to allow the eyes to be closer to the top third?

Here's the post with the photo attached. Please ignore the duplicate post without the photo. Sorry about that one!

I would leave it as it is. It's a great portrait. Your parents will love it and as far as following the "rule of thirds"....aren't rules made to be broken? LOL I think you did a great job. What does your son think of it?

Thank you, Dayna. My son was pleased. He chose another photo with him smiling. Technically, it's not a great photo. But we both agreed that my parents would prefer the smiling photo, and would never notice the technical aspects of the photo.

But the one pictured here is the one I'll frame for my office.

There is nothing wrong with the composition in this photo. His face is taking up the majority of the frame so there are no distracting elements at play. If this were a full or 3/4 body shot, the rule of thirds may come into play, but not here.

What a handsome young man. Nice job, I would hang this one as well if he were my son!
