Nikkor 70-300mm VR lens focusing noisy

Hi - I just bought and received a Nikkor 70-300mm lens yesterday. It makes a clicking and also a humming noise when it is focusing. I tried turning off the VR but it still clicks, no hum. Any ideas? Is this a problem that I should be concerned about? Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks,
Claudine

I have a couple of VR lenses and they do an every so slight click and humming with VR on, but are quiet when turned off. You might want to pop Nikon an email and ask if this is normal.

  Claudine,

If you had said that it was a Canon lens my answer would have been to just ignore it. What Nikon calls VR Canon calls IS.
In both cases it is the internal gyros turning on and off. Some Canons even have a soft hum. It is only the nature of the beast. As long as it is making noise you know that it is on. When I am on a boat and shooting whales I turn it off since I use a high shutter speed.
In that way I save on battery consumption.

Lynn
