Problems with canon 580 ex speedlight flash

My canon 580ex sppedlight will flash but is not communicating with my Canon 40D. The camera does not recogonize the flash and pictures are dark. I recently had my canon 40 d repaired and do not know if this is a factor in this. Is there some step I am missing?
Thanks,
B9th

  Hi B9th,
Check the contacts on the flash & camera hot shoe and make sure they are clean & are connecting together properly. Do you have any other device like an STE2 transmitter or another trigger so you can check/isolate the camera side of this problem ? Also - make sure the flash is set to ETTL & either Master (if using as a trigger for another flash) or OFF. It wont work in Slave mounted on the hot shoe.
Hope it is something simple and you dont have to send your camera back for repairs :)
Carlton

Thanks. I have looked at the contacts and they look good but how would you recommend to clean them? When I enter the flash control menu the camera tells me it is not a compatible flash and does not recognize it. I have another camera but won't be near it until wed. I am hoping the camera work did not affect the flash.

  Hi B9th,
I suspect something went awry when they fixed the camera. Try the other camera and make sure they are set the same and see if it recognizes the flash, that should confirm the camera side.
The only time I have seen this is when I didn't have my flash seated all the way in the hot shoe and I have used my 580 & 430 with a 20D, 40D, 1DS & 5D mk II.

You can rub off anything that might be stuck to the contacts with a pencil eraser or clean any oily stuff with alcohol.
What got repaired on the camera? See if the flash communicates when you just have it in the hotshoe and then doesn't when you lock it into the shoe. If you drop a camera the flanges of the hotshoe can get bent, and while you can still slide the flash into the hotshoe, when you lock it down it leverages the flash up so it doesn't make good contact and doesn't work right.

I have been able to try the flash on my other canon camera and it is not the flash. My camera had the error 99 message and was repaired by the Geek Squad, had an extended warranty. I have emailed them and am awaiting an answer. I have cleaned contacts and it did not help and tried it loose and tight. Any other suggestions. I have a major seminar in about 3 weeks and really do not want to send the camera in until after then if necessary. It took 3 weeks the last time and that is entirely too long for my camera to be gone.... Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like the reassembly didn't go right. Is the geek squad really known for being able to work on cameras? I know digitals pretty much have a computer inside them, but I'm surprise to here that you took it to them. Unless they're just a front and they actually send them to somebody else to do the actual repairing.
Are you in, or close to a major city? There might be a certified Canon repair place that you can take your camera to.

That is what I am thinking. I only did that because I was dumb enough to buy the extended warranty. I guess after the seminar it will go back. I live far from any cities that have camera repairs. I think I am kind of stuck at this point, I will look for one tomorrow. Thanks, I will keep you posted.
