Nikon D90 trouble

I hope someone can help me with this :(.

For some reason my Nikon D90 has been messing up a couple times this has happened. It will stop like it has froze up or locked up and it will say in the err message on the display and if I remove the battery and put it back in then it will let me take pictures again. I looked online to see what would be making this happen and all I saw was "resetting the lens", "clean the contact between the lens and the body to clean it with an eraser" , "replace the aperture mechanism" or this " The F-- error means the camera is unable to communicate with the lens and is caused by a poor connection between the ground contact pin on the lens and the metal mounting ring on the camera. Most people buy the camera, install the lens once and then encounter the error. This one time lens installation does not give the contact point a chance to seat itself properly. You will find that if you hold down the lens release button and twist the lens as if to remove and reinstall the lens about 10 times that the problem will disappear. You don't even have to actually pull the lens away from the body, just press the release button and twist on and off and allow the friction to provide a better electrical contact."

I didn't know if anyone would know what maybe would cause this to happen. I love this camera and it has taken excellent pictures and I have taken a lot of pictures with it and had no trouble at all till about a week ago. I'm planing on going to Vermont by the end of this month and want to make sure it's going to work for me cause I don't want to get up there and can't take pictures or miss out on an outstanding picture cause my camera locked up.

So any information you may have I sure could use it thanks.

If your camera is displaying the "F--" error message with Nikon autofocus lenses, then the answer you found is right. If that error code persists after you've cleaned the contacts and re-attached the lens securely, then the lens may have a fault and need repair.

If you're getting another code in the display, then there is some other problem. Have you looked through the D90 manual's Trouble Shooting section? (pp. 250-257)? Memory cards can go bad, and the camera will freeze if it cannot write to bad sectors. You might try reformatting your card, or replace it with a new one.

  Hi Jon,
Well the error that comes up on my camera is "err" message on the display haven't seen "F--" error message and the clear light that lights up on the front of the camera for the flash it will start flashing on it's own.But like I said if I remove the battery and put it back in then it will let me take pictures again.

I removed the lens and cleaned off the contacts and re-attached the lens securely and for now it seems to be working.Didn't try the reformatting of the card yet since it is working but maybe will try that also.

And I did look in the D90 manual's trouble shooting section and checked the memory card to make sure is was set to lock and made sure the lens was on securely.

So as of now it seems to be working fine. Thanks so much for the help and I will keep you posted if it starts in again.

Similar problem with my D90. I get the "err" message and what sounds like is happening is that the mirror raises but the shutter won't fire. Always get black images when this happens. Have to press the fire button again to release the mirror. When it does fire, the images are underexposed, like the shutter is either too early or too late to provide proper exposure. Sent it to Nikon and they replaced some electrical contacts and sent it back. Same thing again after two shots, so I sent it back the second time. It's been in the shop three days and no status on the fix. I'm not especially confident that it will be fixed (thank goodness for warranty) and if it fails again, I think they will replace the camera. Believe me, if it comes back working, the next thing I'm going to do is buy the extended warranty within the next six months, when the original warranty expires.
