Critique I need some help and comments from experts on how to improve upon these pictures. I submitted them in June's photo contest, and had hopes that they may make it to finalist category. But they havent. :( So how can these kind of images be improved so that they have a better chance of making it to finalists. Thanks

Hi Kapil, I have been here at BetterPhoto for years! It is a great place to learn. I have found that Landscapes category is one of the most competetive and we have some really fantastic photographers here. I don't have any good technical tips for you based on what I see in your portfolio but there are many here who might be able to do so, just wanted to encourage you to not get discouraged and to keep entering, you have a lot of nice images. Kapil, a better solution than posting here would be to ask your question in the Constructive Critique area. To find it: go to your Member Center, then in the upper menu, chose Discussions Q&A, and then 1/2 way down the page, you'll see Photo Discussions, then Constructive Critique. Maybe someone has an easier way to find the CC, and will tell us all about it?

Hi Kapil, Because of the huge number of images entered in the contest those that don't get a finalist are not necessarily lacking. It is more a matter of numbers, not every excellent image will get a finalist. When I look through the outstanding galleries of photographers who receive finalist and winner awards on a regular basis I cannot discern the difference between images that make finalist and those that don't. The fact remains....not every excellent image is selected as a winner. Regarding the specific photo that you asked for a critique; I find the light upper right hand corner to be distracting. The rocks in the foreground nicely draw attention initially but my eye keeps wandering to the right empty sky area. If this were my photo I would attempt to clone some darker clouds to partially fill that void. Irene

Thanks guys! Probably I should shoot more and more and keep entering. Got a bit discouraged but your responses have helped. :) I'll try and post in the constructive critique section.

This is a pretty scene and nice colors. My only slightly negative thing to ask is what pulls your eye through it. I tend to stop at the rocks right in the center. I'd like to see the intersection of sea and land a little lower on the left side to create a line that leads me on a sort of diagonal path through the composition.

Hi Dennis, I understand your point. Adding those kind of lines would certainly improve it. Thanks

I agree with Dennis and Irene. I like the photo you entered. Personally I find my eye drawn to the stormy clouds in the upper left portion of the frame and the very interesting foreground rocks. Have you tried a simple crop of this image? Whatever you do, DONT be discouraged!!
