Creating Storytelling Photos Has anyone ever taken the class Creating Storytelling Photos? It got only one review which was pretty negative, but it looks like a good class. I would like to know how others who have taken the class felt about it.

I took the class and learned a couple of good/important lessons about an approach to photography that I still use. The class may have changed a bit since I took it because some of the "Key Features" have changed. (I will have to see if my "Campus Square" has updated lessons in it.) This is one course that you really have to work at -- not that you don't have to work at any or all classes. I found that I really had to plan my work for each weeks lesson -- you will do several 'story telling' photos for each lesson -- so it takes perhaps a little more work than most courses. It took me a couple of lessons to "get" what story telling is (not for lack of adequate explanation by Rob; his lessons are fairly straightforward) but once I did, it gave me an additional tool when preparing for a photo outing.

Just taking it now...Rob is terrific. His critiques are sensitive and extremely helpful but it is a concept you have to work on to fully understand. Ask questions, express confusion, think about the answers you get....try! I have learned more from what did not work than what has though both are important. It has become a progressive dialogue in which I am learning what "image story" really is. Well worth both the time and struggle to understand!! Sharon

I agree with both RKS and Sharon. overall a fantastic course. But it's not like the other types of photo courses. It's not about a pretty photo, or lines/colors/shapes. There's no rules of thumb, no guidelines per se, just some key concepts. I signed up for the course because I love street / documentary photography, and wanted to learn more about it. For me, the course was very difficult and challenging (in a good way). If Rob ever offers a level 2 course, I'd sign up in a second. I learned the most when Rob told me what does NOT work and why. Reading Rob's critiques is extremely helpful. Highly recommended.
