  Probably a printer, or two.
A computer, or two.
And probably some other people to come get your cards, and do the printing and selling for you.
I've never seen those things work that well because people want to see a whole bunch of pictures but not in the time it takes to make a whole bunch.

So here is the thing...I am printing them all before...I will be making packages of all the pictures and will probably end up with a ton of waste...last year I did it all by my website and she feels I didn't do as well because I didn't have them at the recital. ugh....I don't know if I am going to enjoy this!

I'm a bit confused: You're taking photos at a recital and are expected to have prints to sell after that same recital??

For openers, I'd be very leery of printing photos "on spec" (as an experienced freelance writer, I don't write on-spec articles, either). Printing is very expensive -- and it sounds like you'll have to produce those prints on the spot. If only a handful are sold, guess who eats that cost? And, you'd need to lug a computer and at least one printer to the recital.

If it were me, no matter what this "owner" says, I'd take photos and afterward hand out cards (or just slips of paper) with a Web site address where people can view, and order (or call you), any prints they want after a specific date. That gives you time to do any editing that's needed and upload the photos. Or, you might ask for e-mail addresses of anyone interested in seeing/buying finished photos so you can contact them once you've uploaded them.

When my daughter danced in a studio the studio took orders for formal pics done at the studio and you got them when they came in. There was NO previewing the images and ordering later. You ordered BEFORE the pics were taken or you didn't get anything at all. Bottom line, images paid for and then the pics were printed and you got them.

As for the actual show, they took pics of the kids as they were dancing and they went up on the web for people to view and order. Again, paid for and then the pics were printed and you got them.

Competitions that go 2 - 3 days have multiple computers for viewing pics taken during performances. You put in an order and they mail them to you. If you don't do it at the competition or decide you want more you can go online and order. The stuff comes in the mail. Bottom line, again paid for, then the pics were printed and you got them.

She can not be saying that she expects you to spit out pics that are not already paid for. That makes no business sense at all. If I'm hearing you right she expects you to do a lot of work with no money down.

I wouldn't do it. Of course, if you do and she is not paying a nice hefty sitting fee, then there are no money consequences for her, only you so why should she care.

What kind of contract do you have with the studio? If it isn't in the contract you don't have to do it.

Bottom line -- Money up front or no pics printed.

More...if you're stuck this year, your stuck. Just make sure you are not stuck next year, if you decide to continue doing business with them.

Sorry for the confusion...No, I am taking the pictures the week before..at the studio. Then we are going to be printing the pictures and will be selling them at the recitals. Last year we took the pictures and sold them online...the years before she used someone else and made alot of money and she is getting a kick back so she wants to sell more. I want to know...how am I doing this....print very little of each and then they can order more? I am afraid of the waste...what else is there that I may need to know?

Sarah your right basically, I am coming in and taking picture with no cost to her. Then I am going to be printing and creating packages with hope that people are going to buy them and if they don't...I am the one losing money not her. If I do great then she gets a kickback of what I make. Last year...was great but there were so many people who complained because they didn't get to hold a picture and she thinks we will both do better this way!!! GRRR!

GRRR doesn't even come close, Kellie! From the owner's perspective, it's a heads I win, tails you lose proposition. Bottom line is I wouldn't print a single thing unless I had the money (or at least a written order) in hand. At most I'd take a laptop to the recital to show potential customers the photos, then have order forms for them to sign and you'll mail the print(s) they order. If you end up losing the "opportunity" to take the photos, you really haven't lost a thing.

I think you're asking for trouble printing up at the recital. I figure you being rushed with someone looking over your shoulder. If your name is attached, you should post-process them without interference.

More protection for you if you were to print only the pictures that have already been paid for, or at least had an order placed for them. And maybe make some duplicates of those for display.
And anybody who hasn't made an order can see those that have been paid for on display, and place an order at the recital for their own. Would work well if you have a wireless connection so they can look at the unordered photos on the web. Or make several thumbnail sheets.
