Second camera body

Hello!
I already have a Nikon D700 but am looking to buy a second camera body to have when I travel in case (god forbid) something happens to my D700. This second camera would be of lesser standard.. but it is a just in case scenario. I was kind of thinking about the D5000 since it has video capabilities. Any suggestions on what others have or do?
Thanks!
Pam

  Hi Pam,
I am not a Nikon shooter but I have 2 cameras that I carrry & rely on which is the Canon 5D Mark II (full frame) and a Canon 40D which has a 1.6 cropped sensor. I use my full frame for landscape and 90% of my shooting but the 40D comes in handy with my long lenses when I want a little more reach than I can get with FF and is a solid backup camera.
Maybe the D300 may be a good alternative unless you prefer to get another FF as a 2nd/backup DSLR..
I also read some good things about the D90 & D5000 -

I am sure some Nikonians will chime in shortly :)
Cheers,
Carlton

  Hi Pam,

As usual I fully agree with Carlton. For that matter of fact up until 4 months ago we were using almost the same equipment except I had the older 5D. (I had to pay off my hearing aids and was forced to sell the 5D along with a couple lenses)

As he said you have two choices either purchase another D700 body or go to a cropped camera, unless money is no problem and you can afford the DX or DXs. For the cropped camera I recommend the D300 because it is a camera that everything came together just right. Otherwise the D90. Both of these will give you the quality that you are used to having with the D700.

  Pam,

Whoops! I forgot that you are using FX lenses with the D700. Unless you want to have to purchase DX lenses also it may be cheaper for you purchase the D700 body only.

All good ideas - Thanks! I was hoping to not spend as much as another D700 or even D300. Was going for a 'lesser model' spending maybe $500-$800 range.. like I said, it would be a back up for just in case. I like the cost range of the D3000 or D5000 maybe even the D90 - just not sure if they are good enough to be even a backup? I have a D70s which is a little too low end since it's only 6 megapixels... The FX lens work on DX cameras, right? I'll test that out tonight with my D70s and see. I wouldn't mind the extra reach on the telephoto side..
Thanks again!
Pam

I would opt for a D-300 as a second body. The controls and features mimic the D-700 in many ways.
Plus, the smaller sensor of the D-300 will be an asset when you use your telephoto lenses...in that a 300 mm FX lens will have an equivilent reach of a 450 mm lens mounted onto your D-700.
Your D-700 can be utilized primarily for wide-angle work or whenever you need the advantages of a full-frame sensor.

I made the mistake of purchasing the cheapest second camera body I could when mine went into repair and I suddenly realised I was without a camera for 6 weeks!
I work with a D40x (no where near what you are with but its the principle I think) and bought a D3000 - I really DO NOT like it! I think it has been used about 3 times in the last year. I comes no where near to my D40x for ease of use or picture quality.

I'm now looking to buy a D300s and wish i'd have saved the 500$ that I spent on the 3000!
