Photography Question

Cathy A. Rose

Editor's Pick

I'm new to this site and I don't understand the process of receiving an Editor's Pick. My friend got me started in photography and suggested I join this site. It would help me learn if I do have the ability to move forward with something I love to do!!

Do I need to enter in a contest to receive an Editor's Pick or do I need to submit to a contest to receive it?

Thanks for your help

Cathy

You have to enter the contest (you can enter 1 image per day, you have to select a category for it: Flowers, Animals or something else) and if the image passes the first round of judging (if it is considered a possible candidate for a Finalist), it will receive and Editor's Pick. Not all of these become Finalists or Winners, but if your image does receive an Editor's Pick, it will not win that month. You may resubmit the image next month, if you wish.

Tiia, do I understand correctly that images with the EP label attached can be resubmitted in future months if were not finalists in the month they were picked?

If I understood correctly, would you care to hazard a guess on the adds of doing better second time around?

You may resubmit any image next month or the following ones: even Finalists or Winners, if you wish... with or without changes, to the same or other suitable category. I've seen some people's comments that an image that did not receive an Editor's Pick on a certain month became a Finalist or even a Winner after resubmitting a month later. I haven't resubmitted many images, so I don't know the odds of that, but I got some Editors' Picks for some of them.

Thanks, Tiia. I did not realize it was proper to resubmit an image that got an editors pick.

Needless to say, I am going to start doing the same thing.

I know you can resubmit EPs and Finalists but I thought you could not resubmit Winners. I used to be able to find this information officially on the site but I have looked recently (since they changed the site over a year ago) and been unable to do so. I'm sure it's still there somewhere and would love it if someone could point me to it.

Nikki, I've seen folks resubmit winners, either accidently or on purpose. For one, it turned into a finalist then back in to a 2nd place...zero net gain. For another, his gold medal turned into a finalist and remained a finalist. So, it's a gamble. At least with a resubmit of a finalist, it will never lose its silver badge.

I just want to clarify a "typo" in Tia's first post answering Cathy's question... Tia, I think you accidentally typed:
"if your image DOES receive an Editor's Pick, it will NOT win that month."

I think you meant to tell Cathy, if your image DOESN'T receive an Editor's Pick in that month's contest, it CANNOT advance any further (to Finalist or higher) in that month's contest.

Thanks! Of course I meant that only Editors Picks can become Finalists.

Without looking, I forget how long I have been with BF -- a good 6 years at least. I've always been curious about Editor's Picks also. This thread gives more clarification. I go in spurts with my photography; my goal of course is to always improve and as many, it would be wonderful to one of these days have a winning photo some month.

I would definitely resubmit images in later months that I really felt strongly about, with or without changes. Several of my resubmits made finalist at a later time. Some I tweaked before resubmitting and some I didn't. However, when I resubmit, I submit a new copy (even if I don't tweak it) so that it gets put on the front page of the recent entries. If you resubmit one that is older, it won't be seen under recent entries because BP goes by the date they were uploaded.

Just to clarify with Carol's comment---you can resubmit an old one without a fresh upload of it, and it will go into the contest entries... and it will actually be included in the Recent Entries pages, just way, way, way at the back, based on its older Photo ID number--the BP number that is assigned at the time of original upload. Direct resubmits do get considered for the contest like all the other images, you just have to hunt a lot harder to find them, in Recent Entries; when there are 17,000 entries, that makes a lot of hunting!

Why in the world would you WANT to resumbit a winner? It's a win you can't advance any farther, well except being the overall winner but I think, at least I would, be happy just to have a winner badge. It's a huge and hard contest! So a winner is a real honor!

Meghan, generally, we're talking about resubmitting images that did NOT make it to Finalist or higher... ie, resubmitting an EP image, or a non-EP image, into a subsequent month's contest without re-uploading a fresh version. (An EP is not really a contest "win" level in BP's hierarchy.)
I've seen folks resub a Finalist, and it later made gold, though I think that is very rare.
I would agree on "winners"--I would not want to resub an existing gold medal image without doing a new upload of that image, to avoid any risk of "de-medalizing" the image!

What I don't understand is that I very often win a EP, however it is like a kiss of death as I have not ever been choosen as a finalist in over two years.....
I am not entering to win but it would be nice once in a while to receive a finalist.
It amazes me that to be chosen so often for a EP and yet never get any further is frustrating.......
Anyone feel the same?

Ray, one thing to keep in mind is how EP's work in the contest... you said "kiss of death" by getting an EP, but it is actually the other way around---if your image does NOT receive an EP in the contest month, it means it has been completely eliminated from the contest runnings for that month. Only EP's can advance to consideration for Finalists and higher. Some estimates put it at half the monthly entries make EP, but as this month showed, only 6% of all entries make it to Finalist---that is a tight margin!
I have had months where nearly every one of my entries made EP, and none made Finalist... It is a challenging contest, filled with many super-talented people; just look at the gold-winning images, to see the consistent quality that BP rewards!
I'm glad you don't shoot/enter just to win--that is a sure road to disappointment--but keep shooting for yourself, your own enjoyment... and keep learning, and striving for improvement---lighting, composition, color, details... it all contributes to what BP looks for in winning images.

Thanks for responding Chris....guess what I really meant was that I would prefer NOT receiving EP's as they only raise false hopes.
I really enjoy the friends and friendships made here and I never enter to win but one gets tired of recieving EP's with no hope of ever obtaining a "Finalist"
Thank God for all the great friends!!!

Yes I know that's what we're talking about Chris, but it was mentioned a couple of times about resubmitting the winner photos. That was the only thing I was addressing ;)

HI folks, just to be clear if I have already entered a photo into a category, and have not won an EP after a couple of weeks, I cannot change the contest category until the following month?

That's right, but you can upload a new version of this image and submit to another category if you wish.

Tiia, for a new photo, you can also enter it into the same category in the same month.

Yes, that's technically possible, but it probably is not a great idea to submit the same photo (especially without making any changes) to the same category the same month.

Thank you Tila. I will probably change them a bit then upload them, but re-submit into the same category, after I have removed the old version.

Ken I do that all the time, and it does not seem to affect the outcome, except for the quality of the resubmit. Often I have photos that have to go in catch all, and if they are okay they get an EP. If not I try to tweak them again, or I just leave alone in my gallery, since I like them anyway.

I appreciate all the info laid out here. As I newbie to BP (been a member less than a week), I had/have questions about EPs. This thread has answered many of them. But there is one thing I still don't understand and that is the "end of the month" thing. I have read where images submitted at the end of the month have less chance of being awarded an EP. I have read where some folks stop entering before the last the week of the month. WHY? What is different then? Being a newbie, I am eager to enter. I have entered the past six days and the first two at least have gotten EPs. The third which I feel is the best of the Landscapes, I haven't heard anything on. Same for the last three in Flowers. SO what is the end of the month thing all about?

Welcome, Edward. My opinion: Make 31 entries a month; they all have exactly the "same chance." (Assuming they're all of equal, good quality.) The day of the month makes no difference, and I have several Finalists and even a gold, that were entries I submitted during the last 3 days of the month.
