Processing Raw from 50 D

I just got upgraded to a Canon 50 D and also a G10...I love them both...but I have not taken RAW shots as my CS2 does not seem to open them and the Canon software does not seem like it is worth it to figure it out. I would like to shoot RAW and process them .....and I am not a techie guy at all. Someone suggested get a DNG (?) plug in and CS2 will be fine....or should I get ????.

  Hi, Daryl,

There are some advantages to converting all of your RAW files to DNG. You will find a discussion where the situation is fairly similar to yours, here:

Rather than repeat everything, if you scroll about halfway down the thread you will find a link to an Adobe DNG converter that should work fine.

Cheers,

RK

ACR 4.6 should work - select MAC or PC and download from: http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/10/camera_raw_dng.html

My two cents---the Canon software for converting a RAW file is actually pretty straightforward... I used it exclusively for the first 2 years of RAW shooting, before I ended up with CS4 (which allows me to convert the RAW files as well.) Even now, I still use the Canon software from time to time, because it had grown so familiar to me. If you try it, just be sure you go to Canon's site first, and download the latest version for your operating system. Even when I got my new 7D, the version of Canon's DPP software on the included disc was one or two versions behind the latest version on Canon's site.

I agree; the Canon Photo Pro software is just fine. Use the most recent version you have.

Note re: Adobe software.

It supposts all cameras IF you download and install the update for Adobe Camera Raw -- compatible only with Photoshop CS4 OR Elements 6 or 7 or 8.

Here's where you can get the update.

For Windows http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4622

For Mac
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4621

To find the Instructions for installing it into your computer, scroll down on the adobe.com page to this:

Refer to the following ReadMe file for other updates in this version:Camera Raw 5.6 ReadMe

That provides useful installation instructions.
