Photography Question

Kathryn Wesserling

Canon 7D or 50D

Just found out I'll be receiving an upgrade of my Rebel XT. The choice seems to be between Canon 50D or Canon 7D.

Any opinions and experiences on either one? Member usage is the best review of any camera.

Thanks, Kathy

Kathy - Just how good were you? :-) The two cameras are very similar. On another forum the 7D does come out ahead of the 50D, according to the pixel peepers, but just by a hair. Some of them admit that on a 13x19" print the difference was unnoticeable. The 7D does have more features and some upgrading but is it worth the extra $SS for a cropped camera? Only you can determine that part. I recommend the 50D and save the extra money for some good glass to put on it. Cameras come and go while good glass is always good, well almost always.
For the price of either camera I would rather see you purchase a used 5D. You can purchase a used one from either Adorama, B&H or KEH. Full frame will please you tremendously at the same price. You will not be able to use your EF-S lenses with the 5D because they will not fit the camera. All of the EF lenses you have will be usable.

Whichever you choose I wish you good luck.

Lynn, thank you for your input. With additional feedback and price considerations, I've decided that the 50D is the best choice for me. Your comments have validated that even further.

I'm not in a "Pro" class and rarely print extra large, so the extra $$$ didn't seem worth it to me. The $Savings$ will pay for a whole lot of photo-trips (Niagara Falls this Winter and camping in NY, PA, and home in MI this Summer.)

It would be lovely to go to prime and/or L-glass, but I'd rather travel with what I have. Maybe, someday....

The chance to buy a used 5D from another member did present itself yesterday. Thank Heaven you mentioned the lens-compatibility issue; I just assumed that Canon lenses always fit any Canon camera. What a disaster that would have been for me! Boy! - the things we don't know, eh???

Btw - as to my capability as a photographer - I'm getting better and better, as my exposure-setting/post-editing knowledge and skills continues to grow (owning Topaz filters has helped there greatly, too.) Shooting in RAW has also made a major difference.

What a joy it has been to join the "BP Family".
