Help Portrait Project

I just received the Strobist newsletter and inside was a link to an article about "Paying-it-forward" with the "Help Portrait" program.

I love this idea and in these very trying economic times, it would bring a lot of smiles to a lot of faces. I dont know how many times I have been asked to do portraits by people that really cant afford to have them done, so it never happens. Lots of single moms with kids that are on shoestring budgets out there. I can afford to spend some time & pay for some prints out of pocket to make this happen and I am grateful that I am in a position that I can give to my community.

The brainchild of celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart, Help-Portrait is a movement of photographers, coming together in every major city, to use their photography skills to give back to the community. On December 12th, photographers around the world will be grabbing their cameras, finding people in need, and taking their picture. When the prints are ready, the photographs get delivered. Yep. It really is that easy. This is about GIVING the pictures, not taking them. These portraits are not for your portfolio, website, or for sale. Money isn't involved here. This holiday season, you have the chance to give a family something they may have never had before- a portrait together.

Love in Light - Happy Thankful Day everyone,

Carlton

  Thank you DJ & Lynn,
This project is building up steam quickly and I am now working with Encompass who will provide the space for the shoot and they have contacts with many low-income families that are not reachable via the internet. We will have a poster by the end of today to distribute around to churches, etc and begin signing up families.
I have my Alien Bees & backdrops ready but am going to look for a few simple props like candy canes, etc that I can quicky include per each families preference.
There are many struggling families in my area and I hope this will make their holiday season a little brighter.
Blessings,
Carlton

Help-Portrait photos by Carlton Ward

Family portraits for the holidays
Encompass to host Help-Portrait photographer Carlton Ward
on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 13, to benefit families in need
Have you wanted to have your family portrait taken but cannot afford to have it done professionally? The national Help-Portrait program may be just what you are looking for.
As part of the program for families in need, Carlton Ward, a North Bend photographer, has volunteered to take portraits of Snoqualmie Valley families in need from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at the Encompass Main Campus, 1407 Boalch Ave. N.W., North Bend. After the photo sessions, he will provide each family an 8-by-10-inch portrait, free of charge.
To reserve your spot, please call Encompass or stop by the Encompass Main Campus to sign up.
For more information, call Encompass or visit the web sites of Carlton Ward, www.carltonwardphoto.com, and Help Portrait, www.help-portrait.com.

Well, I met with the Encompass staff and saw the room I will be shooting in and am grateful they have gray walls & ceilings (close to 18%) but I do have a couple of windows to contend with. I though about incorporating the natural light coming through the windows but this time of year, that light can easily change by the hour, so I am going to keep the ambient light out and use my Alien Bees to dictate the lighting.
We already have over 25 families signed up and this was just released in the local paper and announced on the local yahoo groups, so I may have a full 7 hour shoot come Sunday.
Cheers,
Carlton

I just received word that I am completely booked up from noon til 7pm Sunday for this shoot. Lots of similar stories coming from the Help-Portrait.com website as well. It appears the overall success of this worldwide project is going to be a great accomplishment.
Stoked,
Carlton

Sorry to keep harping about this project but it is looking like it will be bigger than anyone imagined. CBS & CNN are running stories and if you go to the Help-Portrait.com website, you will see how many countries, groups & photographers are involved - it is very exciting. 2 local papers may come out tomorrow to interview me & Encompass about our part of the event. I am seeing lots of late requests for helpers, photographers, additional lighting, etc.. so if you still want to be a part of this worldwide event - its not too late.
Just go to the www.help-portrait.com site and sign up on your local group, read the threads and see if there is a place to plug yourself in or just post that you want to help & participate.
We photographers can be the isolated types (I do mostly landscape/nature) but here you will see many photographers working together for a common goal. It will be a great experience for any beginners out there and a wonderful way of giving back to your community for the advanced & pro shooters.
Super-Stoked,
Carlton

I had a busy day with a 7 hour shoot in North Bend, Wa on 12/13.
I still have a bit of touch up editing to do. Encompass made my shoot much easier and I owe them a great deal for making this shoot possible.
45 families are much happier as a result :)
Love in Light,
Carlton
