Anyone familiar with spirit orb photography?

I had my camera on automatic with a flash. You can see the most prominent orb below the woman standing at the glass on the right.

My camera again was on automatic, and the flash was activated. When I adjusted the lighting in Elements, I found the orbs much more noticeable.

They are everywhere I shoot. I wasn't looking for them at this press event, yet here they were.

I have been shooting for about 25 years, and lately, I've noticed that these orbs are appearing in my digital images shot with my Panasonic Lumix digital camera.
I don't think it's dust, as the orbs appear in various parts of the images.

They are of varying sizes and strength, all somewhat circular and a bit uneven in color.

If anyone knows about this sort of thing, I'd like to hear from you.

Does it only happen when the flash is on? You've got me curious now..I've never seen anything like it, but then, I almost never use flash. Seems like it would be some kind of a reflection bouncing off of something, but of course I don't have a clue..I'm going to be interested to see what people have to say about it.

Nothing more than atmospheric dust/moisture being lit by the flash. The points are very close to the camera. They're always there, but are normally not resolved by 35mm or digital SLR cameras because they are to close to be focused. This is mostly a phenomenon with compact digital cameras because their very short focal length lenses give tremendous depth of field and can resolve these very close dust specs as "orbs."

Well, I've heard conflicting reports on this, with many in favor of "spirit orbs" not dust. Supposedly higher end digital cameras don't pick this up. Also, wouldn't the dust be in the same spot on the images?

I'd like to hear more from all of you. I've noticed them more in older buildings, and yes, they seem to be illuminated with the flash.

"many in favor of "spirit orbs"..."

Looks like people were drinking spirits at both events. It's dust.

Ok, maybe I'll try my larger camera and see what takes place. Can't really fathom a digital camera illuminating dust. There are many theories to the contrary...

Mary, what are the other theories? This has been a fun thread to follow.

Here's a response from an associate who discounts the "dust" theories above. I'm inclined to believe her, as I am a firm believer in other types of consciousness out there. There are many dimensions we have yet to prove or disprove, so I'm going with the "spirit orb" theory. It's much more interesting that dust, and it's opened up another portal of photography. Why not? Here's Nancy's reply to my question.

Mary,

I have used about 6 or 7 different cameras. You can talk to the orbs and they sometimes respond. For example, I might ask them to be by a certain tree, and one or two will show up there in my next photo. One time I asked for fast orbs, to which I got two orbs with a tail of light behind them. Once I asked for colors and I got my favorite color, blue. They have conscious awareness. Dust just doesn’t have what it takes to do that!

Back to the cameras, I have used digital and film. I did get my first orb that I am aware of, in 1980 with a film camera. There was an orb over my cat’s head in the house. At the time, I never noticed it but I found the photo years later, after I had begun getting orbs. What I have discovered is that some digital cameras use a certain light frequency blocker, since orbs are in a certain light frequency. The earliest digital cameras did not block this infrared light frequency, and so they began showing up in digital cameras. My most expensive camera doesn’t get them, because of the blocking, but my compact digital point and shoots will get them easily, because the light frequency is not blocked. I have used Nikon, Sony and Olympus digitals and various film cameras. I have gotten orbs with all of them, except my digital Sony prosumer, my most expensive camera. My earlier Sony’s got plenty of orbs, but the Sony prosumer does not.

When you get photos of them, notice where they are on the picture plane. Also notice that there are different kinds. If it was dust or moisture, they would be flat on the picture plane, but orbs will show up behind objects, in front of objects and even appear to have tree branches sticking right through them. There could be dust orbs, I guess, but true interdimensional orbs have texture or are self-luminous or opaque and they respond to thought.

Mary,
I don’t know of any groups, but I do know of individual orb photographers, some of whom do research and have websites, like myself. You can explore these:

www.orbstudy.com, Carol

www.hamburgeruniverse.com, Miceal Ledwith has written the best book on the orbs so far and has co-authored with a physicist.

www.mysterysky.com, Diana Lane Lambert

These people may also refer you to others. Happy orb hunting! They are quite exciting, once you really get interested in them.

It's because of those tiny lenses. And there's a correlation to why dust on the sensor shows on more expensive cameras at small apertures. Because the dust isn't actually on the sensor, but just above it on the glass covering the sensor. And you can see it with the increased depth of field.
But spirit orbs are more interesting than saying it's dust, that part is true.

Ok, here's the photo challenge for those of you in Southern California-check out The Shores Restaurant in Oxnard, or the Glen Tavern Inn near Ventura. They are both rumored to be haunted, and tell us what you find, either with or without the use of your cameras.

I'm off to Costa Rica, but hope to get up there soon...

A few weeks ago, the LA Times published a blurb about spirit orb photography. They published my reply to this story. Clearly, spirit orb photography is gaining momentum...
