Photography Question

Tammy J. Russotto

Do You Ever Feel Like Giving Up...

on your photography?

I've been here for 3 years now and have seen some dramatic improvements in my work. It's good enough to get Editor Picks but that's it.

I entered 24 images for August and received 24 EPs. That as far as I get. I feel as if I'm waisting my time and am ready to just give it up.

Tammy

Dont ever give up! If you truly love photography and love being out in nature -- keep going. The EPs are not the end all, nor is winning contests on the net. I know ppl who did not get an ep and entered other contests with the same photo and won.

Your gallery photos are very nice. A couple were my favorite from the front 2 pages. One was of a great egret, and the other was the b/w lighthouse. You do very nice work.

Keep shooting if you love it. Looks like you shoot in Florida..so do I, South west and sometimes east coast.

Just remember, ansel adams never won an EP at Better photo.

Hello Tammy,
I dont think about EPs and such too much. I just want to improve as a photographer. I still submit a few photos now & then and just about the time I thought I was stuck or wasn't ever going to get to a level that would win anything, I had 2 entries that did very well as a finalist & a 2nd place winner.
I still dont do this for the awards (but I will admit I was very happy about them), I still just strive to get better at my own craft. My family, friends & customers appreciate my work which means more than anything to me. I also seem to go in spurts where I feel I am progressing very well sometimes and other times I feel kinda stagnant.
If you love doing photography, do photography but do it because you love it. I have been shooting since I was 11 years old when I won a 110 Instamatic at a halloween contest and have had the passion for it ever since.
I have my camping friends, festival friends & productions friends & customers who love what I do and that is plenty enough as far as recognition. I started taking my photography more serious when I bought a Fuji Finepix back in 2001 and in 2004 I bought a Rebel and then a 20D in 2005 with a couple of L lenses and thats when I started taking classes with BP and started seeing rapid improvement in my skills.
Another thing to consider is that over time while working to develop your own style, there can be a period of time that things aren't refined but if you keep working, you will see your style developing as you go.
Another thing (being a musician) I can relate to is an interview with jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and he said that "as we get better, the bar gets higher and then we improve getting closer to that bar but then the bar goes up again so we never really get there". The thing is that we may not reach that bar but looking back at the improvement we have made over time, we will see that we have progressed.
Take a breath and enjoy what you have and where you are. I would still be doing photography if there was no Better Photo but I am grateful to Better Photo for helping me achieve some of my goals as a photographer. Its a long journey so enjoy the learning curve.
Try something different like shooting everything from a ladder or laying on the ground and shooting at angles.
Hope this helps,
Carlton
